The European Union Court has just ruled that linking to content can not constitute copyright infringement.
The primary focus of the case was a company called Retriever Sverige AB, which specializes in offering subscription services to links that are otherwise found for free on the internet.
The writers of the articles that Retriever Sverige AB linked to argued that since their stories were being used, and Retriever was making money off of the links, that they were entitled to compensation from Retriever.
However, the EU court ruled that creating clickable links to content on other websites, which aren’t restricted in any way, is fair game for anyone on the internet to link to. If the links bypassed restrictions, then the EU court would have ruled it to be copyright infringement.
