For those that don't put as mucvh emphasis on performance cars ;) Here's quite a nifty site to check how safe your car actually is :

www.euroncap.com

Um.... put it this way... the Chevrolet Aveo get s 5 start Ncap rating... the highest possible. So don't tell me it's as safe as a larger car with the same rating...
The problem with 5 star ncap ratings is that almost every car on the block has it.

They should make a 7 star ncap then, because everyone has scrambled to get ncap5 compliant...

True... but back to the Aveo.... an Aveo will without a doubt, not survive a crash compared to let's say the average decent 4 door sedan (C class, 3-series, Mazda, Focus etc). Yet it's "Ncap 5".....

This is mixing threads but we have the same OP so felt it best to keep this comment on this thread but I was having a look through the NCAP FAQ after reading Froot's comments and came across this in reference to them testing the frontal accidents at only 64km/h :

Should this not be higher given driving speed limits are higher?

Accident research shows that carrying out frontal impacts at 64km/h speed covers a large proportion of the serious and fatal accidents which occur. Even if the maximum speed limit is 120 km/h, few accidents occur at such speeds and where they do, it is beyond current capabilities to provide protection for the car's occupants.

And speed does not kill....

...and more on topic to the above discussion we have this :

Will the rating system change?

The Euro NCAP procedures evolve continuously to take account of new developments.

Its not the car that has to survive, its the person inside :p

Okay, put it this way. Compare a sedan and the Aveo in an accident, let's say head-on. The Aveo has 60% less frontal volume than a sedan. It significantly changes the chances of survival.

In Hans Strijdom drive in Pretoria there is a lovely downhill (with a camera now) where there was 11 truck accidents in the space of 5 months. About 15 people killed during that time.
A lady drove with her BMW the one time and not the Aveo, for some reason. She was involved in an accident with a runaway truck there and because of the larger engine area, she survived.

on topic.... :)

in the ncap test, they only test in a certain way, and the car manufactorers know how they test, so they make their cars stronger on those little ways so that they get 5 stars. The ncap test now is just rubbish

...

Will manufacturers not just design their cars to pass Euro NCAP tests?

No. Vehicle manufacturers have to design and test their cars to meet many more safety issues than are tested in the Euro NCAP tests. However, some use the Euro NCAP procedures as an in house target/standard for those aspects that we test.
