Anybody know anything more about this new service to Africa, apparently starting mid-October 2004? The bird was launched on 16 March this year. Hub in Turin.

W3A Frequency bands for Africa:
Down: 10.95-11.2GHz and 12.5-12.75 GHz. Up: 14.0-14.5 GHz.
1.2-1.8m dishes seem to be OK, depending on location.

Apparently, some ISPs will be offering a 512/128 40:1 shared link for less than 80 pounds per month...?

Here is Eutelsat's page: http://www.eutelsat.com/satellites/7e_w3a.html

I'd love to get a way of bypassing the local bottlenecks completely.

That's R1000 a month with the high latency associated with satellite, hopefully not capped though. Only really worth while if you're a massive leecher.
