Thanks to everyone for the advice on LED lighting and SWH. Now for the next question in the Quest to Get Off The Grid: Cooling the house.

The double-story house is in the Klein Karoo, where it gets intolerably hot in summer. The house, or at least the main living areas and bedrooms, need to be cooled From October to April, and I'd like to do this using solar energy.

Some web research suggests the Oz evap system is more efficient and reliable than local designs. Does anyone have any advice and/or experience with evap cooling, especially in the super-hot Klein Karoo?

I'd like to power the system off a solar PV/battery/inverter popwer source. Is this feasible? I know upfront costs are higher, but surely this can work reliably for years and years?

Any suggestions, comments, or advice most appreciated.
