Anyone here play EVE? I was just wondering if there were any specifically South African corporations. I currently have just under 4 million skillpoints and I'm having a blast :D

There are plenty SA Eve players around. Just do a quick search on the forums here for EVE, and you should see :)

Look me up in game if you want. Not on too much lately due to work, but log in once a day or so with one of a number of alts.

One of my chacaters names is Rooikop if you wanna look me up in game.

Similar to Freelancer to give you the initial impression, then nothing near as simple ;)

How is EvE? I've always heard about it but never really paid much attention. Is it hard to get into ? Does it have a steep learning curve?

Few questions.

1. Do you play a single char that needs to run around cities/planets/space stations ?
2. I know you fly spaceships :D
3. NPC interaction and a story line ?

Does the game include gametime ? Is there game cards or only CDC subs ?

1. Unfortunately, you are limited to your spaceship as your are basically a pod-bound vegetable called a capsuleer. You do however, dock at stations but that's all. I assure you that with over 8000 systems now, there is plenty in space to keep you satisfied :)
2. Yes you do :D
3. PvE in EVE = total rubbish. PvE is an afterthought addition. You do all your levelling by "learning" skills. The plus side of this is that skills can train when you're offline. You will see virtually no similarities to current MMOs in this game.

This learning curve for this game can best be described by the following picture:
http://www.eve-au.com/eve-curve.jpg

For beginners this game is truly brutal. I quit 4 times before starting to enjoy it. EVE online is a hardcore "sandbox" MMO where the players shape the world. You can be attacked anywhere by other players but CONCORD, EVE's police force, acts as a deterrent in "high-security" space. High-security space or highsec is the region in the centre of the EVE universe. As the universe branches out, the security level gradually decreases and naturally so do player pirates. The catch is that the best minerals are located in "low-security" space. "No-security space" or nullsec is governed completely by player alliances. Alliances can claim sovereignty over systems and go to war with each other. Politics is perhaps the most important part of this game. There are massive fleet battles(400+ ships) that take place daily between major alliances in a bid for territory. These are not instanced battlegrounds but open-world events. The EVE universe is all on one massive server computer, meaning the 250 000 people who play this game are all together, all the time.

Let me give you an example to emphasize its brutality: there are certain corporations in EVE consisting of mercenaries or "guns for hire". Players contract this mercenaries to target certain individuals or corporations. In 2005, a mercenary corp was hired to infiltrate one of the top alliances and assassinate its leader. For years, mercenary agents worked their way up through the ranks of the target corporation, eventually reaching the top echelons of leadership, eventually earning sufficient levels of trust. The corporation executor or leader was convinced to go on a parade through the corporation's territory in a very expensive ship to promote the alliance. At a set time, agents in the corp drained every single asset; ships, ISK etc, destroyed the executor's ship and then destroyed her pod and finally shut down the corporation completely by closing it.

If anyone wants to start, I can send you special 21-day trials and give you some money to get started. I suggest you join EVE University, a player-run professional corp who will teach you everything you need to know.

Been playing EVE for 6 months now +/- 8,500,000 SP and I'm still considered as a noob even thou I feel quite safe in 0.0 space and I PVP allot. The learning curve is steep and no instant gratification which mean the ppl playing the game really love and enjoy it :)

Our corp is about +/- 110 with about 5 South African's in it and 2 of them at Director level. Check out Pax Britannia Corporation and Rally Against Evil Alliance if you like.

Definitely worth the 21-day trial!

Pitbull, the client is not available in a retail box in South Africa yet. You will either have to download it or get it from someone close by who has it. Keep in mind it is +- 2GB. The full installer will always have the latest patch applied. I highly suggest doing the trial before you buy anything.
