No its not free unfortunately, costs like 100-150 a month depending on the dollar exchange rate. Quite expensive, but I thinks its worth it for what you get.

I started playing on a trial account 2 days ago, while it is playable on ADSL, the lag does spoil the experience, I find that my ship "warps" unexpectedly lots of times and system jumps don’t work well at all.

Thanks vio. I am having similar problems, jumps can take ages and there are some slowdowns when warping into a belt. I only noticed the lag last month, ive been playing for over 2 months.
