SA vet to perform landmark surgery

A South African vet will perform what is being described as the world's first cataract surgery on an orangutan in Malaysia, an official said Tuesday.

"It will be the world's first cataract surgery on an orangutan and it is going to be performed on home territory. It will be a big achievement," the Times quoted Amilan as saying.

he Matang wildlife official confirmed it was the first ever such surgery performed on an orangutan.

The newspaper said Aman, who was rescued from a market in Sarawak, had suffered two permanent injuries - his tongue was removed after he bit an electric cable and his left index finger was bitten off by another orangutan, the report said.

Aman has two female offspring, both now living with him at the center, officials said.

SA Health Department honoured by WHO
The Department of Health has been honoured by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Geneva for its critical contribution to global public health.
A recognition certificate was awarded to the Department during a celebration event at the WHO Headquaters in Geneva on 3 May 2007, to mark a 10-year successful implementation of the vaccine vial monitors (VVM) to improve access to immunisation.

“The Republic of South Africa’s involvement in the early stages of development, through conduct of field studies for the implementation of VVM, was critical for the successful 10 years,” the WHO, said.

And there's more, much more :D

Congratulations to trhe health dept, but let's seriously get working on providing ARV's for evryone. This is a real threat to our economic growth. That being said, celebrate our other achievements we certainly must.

The first article said the surgery will be performed in Malaysia, then went on to say that it will be on performed on home ground.

Anyway, a nice change to read good news. :) Keep it coming.
