Hi Guys

I have a 4 gig unshaped I bought from Imaginet and currently... I have to say... I'm disappointed. paying nearly 2x the price of a 30g and still on my World of Warcraft I get a ping of... wait for it... 3000ms!!! I mean what am I paying for!! isn't this suppose to be top notch pings? Anyone else having this issue with their unshaped I would really like to see if it's just me or everyone.

in my opinion still sucks since the shaped account is only 20ms slower in this regard. As for World of Warcraft pings ... their still to high for my liking at 1200ms.... oh wait.. just got up to 3000ms again!!compared to last week 780ms odd ...

oh well thanks for the feedback.

In what areas are you getting that high latency? And what is your line speed, if I may ask?

Our VPN is not experiencing this, as I have noted before, unshaped seems to suffer along with shaped during the bad times of the month. The only difference I know of between unshaped and shaped, shaped suffers thruout the month with high ping but particulary end month. Unshaped is great during the month but end month it also shows sad ping.

Users getting on nukecap vpn about 500ms today, if thats what your results were for.

just a funny note... my shaped was faster than my unshaped in WoW :P I guess their just messing with us... anyway, my line is a 384k line and I live in Durban North area.

Hi - we had a customer call in with a similair problem just now. Aparently the unshaped (and shaped) is having problems with Lineage, WOW slow pings etc. What is strange is we ran a few PING tests and he was getting nice and fast sub 300ms to google.

Can you do a tracert - perhaps its a routing issue in the USA? I certainly SAIX is not messing with ANY shaping on the line since that is out of bounds.

The usual SA response

Now I'm not saying the above is definitely not the case, but it made me laugh anyway coz every time I have a prob Mweb blames Telkom and Telkom blames Mweb

Neither of them have ever said it's a problem on the US side though, so 10/10 for that interjection.

PS: Pls don't tell Telkom or Mweb about it I'd rather they just kept blaming each other coz I'd hate to have to end up in GTMO just for complaining about US policy

Yup - ISPs love to blame each other.. Such is the internet - fragile system of co-dependance. ;p

This is the tracert I get going to www.google.com and in my opinion is pritty slow as soon as it hits the international pipe if it is the international one I'm just guessing :)

Gotto remember, that with any MMORPG , like WOW....its not the ping that makes the difference. Yeah the ping is nice for when your in a PVP zone. But what makes the difference is *No-PacketLoss* Thats why you can play MMORPG's through a 56k modem.

Normal Adsl does give better ping times than unshaped alot of the time. But you get a big packet loss factor. Unshaped cutts out the packet loss and gives you a steady ping of 350+-...

I have used unshaped for about a year now, and I have not been upset. yeah the price is high, specially since I went through Telkoms ISP for it in the start...but im very happy with Webafrica's unshaped. No worries. No Link-Dead issues from games etc.

LOL My ISDN line gives me better pings than UNSHAPED DSL !!!!

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL........

I agree i had really crappy connection speed and a lot of packet loss last night playing WoW. And it really sucks if you are in molten core and you maybe get 1 packet every 60 seconds.

According to some info I got the whole recent lag issue is related to the ISPs offering accounts with 30Gb caps, and people now constantly downloading p2p and other data using those accounts.

Well, also keep in mind. Yesterday was the 30th...most people are downloading to get as much as possible out of their 30gig accounts now.

It has been like that for a long time actually. Obviously with all the 30gig accounts its worse. But the end of the month has always been a lag issue. Everybody has left over bandwitdh and they want to use it.

The lag will probably continue tonight as well, and slowly get back to normal from tomorow onwards. Then rinse repeat for next month.

Typed a reply, and my PC crashed before I could submit.

To put it short because I'm not in the mood to retype it :D. Packet loss does make a difference but Ping is just as if not as critical Even in PVE situations, ESPECIALLY for WoW.. Had also typed out all my reasons, but the are up in the gaming section on WoW if ya want to know :) No way you can play wow and be worth anything unless you are sitting next to the blizz server and your 56k modem is dialing direct.

IMO a ping of even up to 700ms is fine when playing MMORPG's. Only in PVP situations are you looking for a lower ping.

Monsters are predictable, you know what the monster will do, after a while you even press the ability button out of habbit, not out of the fact that you see whats gonna happen. And normally against a monster you have time to correct a mistake. Specially in a game like Wow, that is pretty easy.

With a 56k modem you can plug in, and play WoW fine. You will just get lag in the big cities like Iron Forge.

Obviously Unshaped or ISDN is prefferred.

I have tried it all and I have played alot of MMORPG's. It's possible :)

Not sayings its not possible, but where are you going to get a 700 ms ping on a 56k modem?

Also played it all and tried them all, Been playing online since 93, first MMO was NWN AOL in the USA, from there I've tried every MMO thats ever come out and is worth a damn (played quite a few that where not either), I'm on the Beta test lists for 6 Major companies and do reviews for 3 companies..So I get most of my games for free :) So yeah.. I've also been there.

My point is that even in WoW PVE things do not always go as planned, especially in the Higher level instances. I do not know anyone that hasn't wiped in them with 50ms pings!

ie:
Mage trying to freeze somebody/something, waits 1 secs for a response, by the time it comes and he turns to cast.. DEAD

Rogue waits 1 sec to see if his gouge stuck while trying to spin around and backstab.. DEAD

etc, you know what I'm getting at

In PVP its impossible!

Other than the end of the month, even normal ADSL is/was "ok" but once I tried unshaped through NC, I dont ever want to go back, I had to change my whole game plan, Had to do the same with UO back in 97 and man that sucked. I had more potions on me than a pack horse on steriods on order to do any PVP

If you wanna use a 56k modem, join us in forgottenworlds (remake of NWN) where its turn based, or maybe even Realms to an extent

Possible yes... Fun.. Hell no!

/sigh...

To all the 56k'ers out there. It's possible, and Any MMORPG is fun...Dont give up :P

And aye I have been playing online since '94, first mmorpg was UO didnt like the graphics dropped it, waited for EQ then played that.

Btw are you from SA? How do you get the games for free?
I also have a couple of contacts, but I have been unable to convince them to send it to SA, as in most companies just say they have to much hassles.

And no way in hell im downloading a game. First I only could afford a 3gig capped account. Then I couldnt be bothered to download with a ISDN. Now unshaped, No way im capping that baby :P.

Hmm didn't mean to upset ya, Also dont wanna upset in 56k'ers out there, But I also dont want them to waste money. I'm also trying to be realistic.

Its also more than fun, but on a slow line you wont be getting the full enjoyment out of the game. I played on 56k for years! Never moved over to ISDN, and when ADSL came out and I found out my exchange was not planned for the first roll out.. I sold my house and MOVED to an area where it was, 60 km's away (Got lucky though and got a much better house thrown in to the whole deal)

When I did get it I tried UO again.. I couldn't believe I had played like that for so many years, But I did.. and I did have fun.

Funny though, I never liked EQ, to me its not about the graphics its about the game play :) Which could be why I suggested forgotten world or realms to anyone who wants to try on a slow line, but if its graphics you like.. dont waste your money either (FW is free though and in open Beta)

As to the "free games", Born and breed South African :D , But over the years my contacts have become very close friends, Who I sometimes speak to more on the phone and that than friends next door. So they come from these friends who work in the industry (I usually pay for shipping though). The "contacts" I have usually give me the same BS story about it being a hassle, Of couse those do get me into all the BETA's, There are some more.. hmmm well you know full well about NDA's :(

And I'm in the same boat as you are with downloading, I can also only afford the 3 gig capped, and now I have my NC account. When all the changes finally happen and pricing is finalized, I'll start shopping around, until then i'm staying where I am. Only time I might download is if I have a gig spare at the end of the month, I cant afford to be capped either.

The rest, I rely on my friends in the USA/UK that burn them for me and send them over.

Though realistically.. really 56k is not going to cut it if you want to enjoy most MMORPG's now days to the fullest, You will still have fun though. Packet loss is important, but equally if not more so in some cases as your Latency
