....staring at a car on Autotrader every single morning for days, desperately fighting the urge to mess up your financial status completely by doing something stupid.

Well here's my achilles heel:
http://www.autotrader.co.za/used-ca...b6d56c1d4a47/makemodel/make/lotus/model/elise

Just look at that thing.
1.8l (30MPG), 0-60 in 5 seconds or less. :erm:
*sigh*

Always been my dream car, and to think it's actually so cheap, yet, so expensive (if you don't have the extra cash to spare).
So who here has ever owned or driven one of these? I actually wish I could just take it for a spin, but I know if I did I probably won't sleep for a week.

Yes - In your case it's a great car but consider:
1) Repair costs (you don't know how it has been driven or by whom).
2) Insurance and waiting period for parts following an accident
3) Practicality- you buy it and then get told you wife is expecting triplets.

But hey you only live once.

1) Repair costs (you don't know how it has been driven or by whom).

Indeed, but since it uses a lot of Toyota parts I'm sure engine wise you should be OK. Then again, Lotus did make some changes to chances are you's probably en up ordering stuff from overseas (not necessarily a bad thing since the price of parts in SA is ridiculous compared to other places and I've saved a lot by ordering parts myself on my current vehicle), you'll just have to be OK with waiting, which is fine I guess if you make sure to add car rental to your insurance for like 60 buks a month.

2) Insurance and waiting period for parts following an accident
This would be the big one. I'm sure they won't base thhe insurance for this thing on the engine displacement alone.

3) Practicality- you buy it and then get told you wife is expecting triplets.
Luckily I'm not married so it's not an issue now. :)
I currently drive an MX-5 so I'm used to not having boot space etc. But yeah, this will also be a daily driver and I think the space in the Elise is like 1/3 or 1/2 the space in my current car. Haven't had issues with the space in the MX though.

Will you be trading in the mx5 or donating it to rpm as a prize for the next mybb competition? :) I think I prefer the mx5 always had a soft spot for it, but it sounds like you got the sickness you know there is only one cure.....

I wouldn't say every morning :D But I'm an impulse buyer and sometimes it's very hard to fight the urge to fsck up my financial status when I see an awesome car at a good price.

hehe, that's one of the problems. Not sure I have the balls to get rid of my MX, in fact, I've been looking around a bit and one of my other options is to rather pay off my MX and take like R30K - R40K, spending it on a decent Supercharger, brakes and exhaust upgrade, would make for an awesome track-day and weekend driver... I had this in mind:

Wilwood - Red Calipers - Vented Rotors

94-03 MP62 Street Supercharger

I'm not much of a "ricer" type though, so it needs to look standard. All I know is that dropping 200HP+ at the wheels of a little MX will make for some serious fun.
