We come here on a daily basis to moan, criticize, insult, exchange opinions between ourselves hoping that someone with a bit of authority follows up on the ideas and points discussed here. But does anyone really takes note of this forum?

Does the majority of Telkom users know about this forum?

How many people would like to make their voice heard but, either don’t know of this forum’s existence or have no means to get to the internet?

Isn’t perhaps a daily newspaper interested in granting this forum a little space and publish what is discussed here? To make the public get more involved? We need a much bigger exposure then this.

There was talk of a march, there was talk of a protest in front of parliament … what happened?

Now our hopes are with DOTCO’s court case outcome?

We need lawyers with balls to take on Telkom, to stop the “rapping” of telecommunications in South Africa, but the good lawyers either left the country or are too busy thinking about their Christmas Holidays.

We need to do something really fast. This is getting more and more ridiculous, now we even argue about which is more reliable, Saix or IS, shaped or unshaped.

Why does the term shaped even exist in ADSL? Isn’t the fact that we are so far away from the place where most of the information lies enough for the speeds to be slower? Why shape it even more? Isn’t maybe illegal to shape the product, can anyone maybe comment on this? Its like buying a car and the agents throttle its performance and you can only travel at 60Kph.

A daily story on a newspaper would get this forum many more signatories and Telkom would realize that its not only the ADSL users that are unhappy but 100% of their customers.

Get the YOU Magazine involved, we need just one page there, get leaflets inserted into newspapers, get talk radio stations … etc etc etc

The beast must be tamed, then killed. Its time to start interviewing the SNO, they must mention their plan to take away business from Telkom as soon as possible.

My happiest day will be when I can Telkom and say “please send someone to remove your sh@t from my premises with immediate effect or else I will do it myself.

ITS LATE I'M TIRED SO IF THIS DOES NOT MAKE SENSE NEITHER DOES THE SHAPING OF ADSL.

"Its like buying a car and the agents throttle its performance and you can only travel at 60Kph." - Many cars are actually limited down below their actual speed. But this is a bad analogy. It is more like being sold petrol with a bad octane (Think that is correct)

Many things have already been done and are being done.
But I like your enthusiasm. If you end up doing anything that is. :-)

Agreed. There are many things many people are doing, and they are starting to show good results. Helltel, why not make a submission to ICASA on their draft regulations?

I live in Blouberg, Cape Town. We have a free local newspaper here, with a consumer Ask Joss column - run by the editor of the said paper, he usually tackles similar problems, and of course his articles get read by thousands of households here, maybe someone would like to write a letter to this gent?
Anyone from Table View, Milnerton, Blouberg(grant)/strand etc here?

From my experience the content on this forum has no effect on the direction or governance of the ICT industry. I do however believe the real world efforts of some of the prominent members has the potential to contribute towards change.

Bottom line is you feel the need to participate in change, posting your views, needs and beliefs here will do squat ... you need to get off your ass & do something in the real world.

That would just swop one monopoly for another.

@PeterCH

Writing to community/suburb newspapers is a great idea. Unfortunately, informing the majority at large is only a small percent of the solution, providing reasonable and useful actions is the golden egg.

Whilst informing people of the current PSTN and data access pricing situation is a valuable first step, it will only result in an attitude such as "Ag man, Telkom are ripping us off. Eks so woes ek kon skree. But what can you do, they are the only providers?".

If we can come up with viable action elements that do not involve huge amounts of time, or energy on the part of average joe, then we have a strategy for doing something. I mention time and energy as, realistically, the average joe will not put much time and energy into something unless it is absolutely critical to them.

So what can the average joe contribute to fix the situation? That is the million dollar question.

Peace.
