How close are we to creating life in a lab?

Not close at all. Even the simplest form of life is complex -- therein lies the problem.
I think the most probable of the suggestions thus far is that of self-replictaing RNA; but from what I understand it's far from being considered plausible right now.

Keep in mind, that the processes that created life as we know it took many billions of years to reach a point where we would use the word 'life' to describe the result, so it's not a question of just figuring things out and letting an experiment run, these things take more time by many magnitudes of a human life.

Wikipedia has a good definition: "Living organisms undergo metabolism, maintain homeostasis, possess a capacity to grow, respond to stimuli, reproduce and, through natural selection, adapt to their environment in successive generations."
