Why thieves aren't touching electric cars

Electric vehicles (EVs) are far less likely to be stolen by thieves due to their advanced tracking and security technology and the lack of demand for their parts on the black market.

That is according to the US's National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) and Institute for Highway Safety (IHS).

Thought a 5kw battery weights 50kg, not 10kg.

Well the advantage that EVs have is they have less parts overall - a lot less.

So chop-shop style operations will not work as well.

It's simply wrong to say "many modern cars feature advanced security". The CAN bus inside modern Toyotas do not have authentication ("encryption"). Thiefts break the headlight, connect to the CAN bus and send commands like unlock doors and start engine.
