A few weeks ago my friend purchased this in this router for his upcoming fiber install. He passed it by me and asked if it'd work and I skimmed through the specs and told him yup ...

But the fiber guys came in yesterday and said it wouldn't work. He took their 'free' example and wondering - what is eWan? And the invoice says fibre ready ? IS the invoice and the modem different models?

Invoice says :

AMG 1302-T11C - Zyxel AMG1302-T11C Wireless N ADSL2+ 4 port gateway with eWan (fibre ready)

AMG1302-T11C is an advance ADSL2+ gateway, which provides ADSL2+ for high speed Internet access. It is designed with multiple WAN function, suitable for future FTTH deployment with optimized CAPEX. Additionally, it integrates IEEE 802.11 b/g/n access point and 10/100 Ethernet switch for Local Area Network (LAN) access.

Does it say LAN4/WAN? If so then it will work.

Looks like it should work. That LAN4/WAN port should be able to take connection from your FTTH CPE device and act like a standard router.

Edit: Typo

Yea.

LAN1/WAN / LAN 2 / LAN 3 / LAN 4 / DSL

Someone said it shouldn't be an RJ11 ?
A different connection perhaps ?

The RJ11 is for the ADSL connection. With fiber, connect the CPE to LAN1 instead using an ethernet cable.
