Bloemfontein - A former Free State police officer has been jailed for in effect 35 years for murder and hijacking, the Hawks said on Thursday.
Ex-constable Sam Nkambule, 37, was sentenced on Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to murder and truck hijacking, Captain S’fiso Nyakane said.
Nkambule and his accomplice, Lebakae Ntsekalle, hijacked a truck being driven from Maseru to Durban on February 20 2015.
The two shot and killed the driver and dumped his body in a river between Ficksburg and Fouriesburg.
“The owner of the truck noticed through a tracking device that his vehicle had been stolen, and informed the police.”
Ntsekalle was arrested first. Following an investigation, Nkambule was caught. Both were charged with murder and truck hijacking.
In September 2015, Ntsekalle pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 38 years in prison.
