Exactly how bad is wireless internet latency?

Hi there,

With fibre still a long way away, I need a faster connection to my home office in order to run voip just to get my phone bill under 3k a month.

I can get business fibre, but I don't have 5k a month and I definitely dont want to sign a 24 month contract when prices just keep going down.

I have been approached by several companies who offer affordable wireless solutions at high speeds, however, being a gamer, ping is something that is important to me. So if anyone is gaming over wireless, can you please advise me how bad are latencies so that I can make some sort of informed decision.

Latency can be really decent however it does heaviliy depend on your LOS of the highpoint and distance to it as well. ask the companies if any of them will be willing to run a demo from your premises to insure your connection will be good.

You mentioned gamers - in gaming, jitter is just as important as ping. I found that, whilst latency can be good at its best, jitter is always ****ty. It's the reason I got ADSL in the end.

Not in my experience, only if something is up with your ADSL. Jitter is about 2ms for me, whilst on mobile it was about 10 or more.

OP is talking about wireless internet, not mobile internet (LTE).

I took the plunge & switched... Way better than ADSL, I've had problems with ADSL for over a year. Ping is around 150-180 to the UK, largely depends on LOS, which they tested during the site survey, so I knew what I was going to get before they installed.

If you have Rain LTE that could be an option because of the free router and relatively big cap. If not Telkom LTE can also be an option and lastly Cellc LTE or LTE-A can also be a an option.

I would always recommend installing a poynting antenna just to get that extra signal strength and stability but obviously not a must.

In General LTE latency is pretty decent and can compare very well with ADSl or even beat it.
