Exactly who is shaping / throttling???

Hi.

Exactly WHO is responsible for shaping / throttling??? Is it Afrihost or Rain???

Reason I ask is because I'm done with this s**t. As per some other posts: there is no question in my mind that my service is being shaped / throttled between 6:00pm and 11:00pm at night. Have tried to find out from Afrihost why I'm being shaped / throttled and not a single response of any meaning or substance whatsoever (now they're simply ignoring me). I want to now move to another provider BUT everywhere I look: Rain comes up e.g. VOX offers the exact same deals as Afrihost using the Rain network but how do I know that if I change to VOX (for example) I'm not going to end up with the exact same issue (and VOX, for example, may end up telling me that it's Rain and there's nothing they can do).

Regards,

Dale.

Axxess also offers the Cell C fixed LTE and it’s awesome. Why are you still with rain?

Hello.

Thanks for the response. Much appreciated.

I actually noticed that when looking around for alternatives i.e. AXXESS and Cell-C (although they also do offer Rain).

But that's my point: is this shaping / throttling a Rain issue or are the providers such as AXXESS, Afrihost, VOX (the list goes on) responsible (or both for that matter)???

It's a rain issue. Afrihost and other fixed LTE partners don't have any control over the fixed LTE network.

Hi.

It's a rain issue. Afrihost and other fixed LTE partners don't have any control over the fixed LTE network.

Thanks very much. That's exactly what I needed to know.

Gotta love this response just received from Afrihost (to my question as to WHY the slow speeds between these exact times):

"Good day Dale

Trust your well .
You getting slow speed around that time because it is peak hours .
A lot of people are connecting to the RAIN tower in your area .

Afrihost.com
Pure Internet Joy!"

Do these people think we're all idiots or what???

Oh well. I guess I've no choice but to try the Cell-C suggestion.

Thanks again all.

Dale.

It's a good day today i.e. got TWO responses from Afrihost in one day (FINALLY). Here's the second (this after me asking them, in response to the above, exactly what type of idiots do you they think they're dealing with i.e. does EVERY SINGLE PERSON in my area turn on their TV at EXACTLY, to the second, 6:00pm and then EVERY SINGLE PERSON turns off their TV at EXACTLY 11:00pm to the second every single night):

"Good day Dale

Trust your well .
Unfortunately , It's a RAIN issue and we most definitely not shaping or throttling your account .
It's peak hours the rain tower in your area is congested .
I have asked my manager to call you regarding your issue .

Afrihost.com
Pure Internet Joy!"

Not holding my breath for a call from management though. Whatever. It makes no difference i.e. if this is the case well it's time to look elsewhere. Anybody know what speeds they're getting via Cell-C (AXXESS) at ALL times??? Would be appreciated if you could post some tests.

Regards,

Dale.

I'd cool it for a bit and see how the first month shakes out. rain's offering is less than a month old at this point and hasn't really been given a proper shakedown. They might re-evaluate their shaping policies once they have a good idea of what their network profile looks like. They did say that they were going to be tweaking things in the first few months to see what's best for their network and the user experience.

Hello.

Thanks again for the post and input. Fair comment no question.

But it does irk me that a) all was fine up until the middle of June and b) I'm, of course, paying (R1 600 per month) for a service that is all but useless to my household (those times are mostly when those around here need the speed that I ordered and pay for). And not to mention the fact that there is ALWAYS some type of catch or the other with ANY service in South Africa of late. In this case if it's not some "small print fair usage policy" then it's something like this (as most others have mentioned: it's a capped service and and should not be subjected to this unless the cap is breached). I mean to say: had Afrihost told me that "hey: from 6:00pm to 11:00pm the best you're going to get is 3.5Mbps or less" I wouldn't have bothered (and even in THAT statement lies an issue i.e. Afrihost and all of these other service providers using Rain say to expect speeds of 10Mbps up to 50Mbps. Geez. I may EVEN have lived with the 10Mbps at night but 3.5Mbps and mostly worse at night???). It's absolute nonsense. It's fraudulent in my opinion. At very least it's false advertising. And there's NOTHING anyone can do about it or so it would seem i.e. "just suck it up". Where are all these councils and authorities and consumer protection people??? It really is getting out of hand here.

Anyways. Like I said. Thanks for the post and input. Much appreciated.

Regards,

Dale.
