In my 4 years at UJ I have seen this happen twice.
I generally assume its handbrake failure, although in this instance, a newish Audi, I'm not sure how likely that is..

Wait a second people don't leave their cars in gear when on an incline? Uh. General rule of thumb, put the car in a gear opposite to the way it would roll. So if the rear of your car is facing down the slope put it in first, put it in reverse if the front is facing downhill. Second thing is turn your steering wheel to the side so that if it does roll, it rather scratches the car next to it, instead of rolling down the hill and possibly wrecking your car and another (or killing someone).

Your gear theory won't work with a gearlock.

hehe. The direction doesn't matter - you can always put it into reverse regardless of where its pointing & the effect will be the same. The only thing of any interest is whether the 1st gear or reverse gear has the lower ratio, generally their similar but it depends on the car. Either will work really.

Well normally a gearlock would require your to put your car is gear, normally 2nd... Well at least the ones I had.
Thats kinda odd - with a gearlock in 2nd gear you'd still be able to drive the car away. Not very gracefully sure...but still. Most gearlocks I've seen use reverse.

I've done it in 3rd gear.

if I was student and able to afford driving such a car I wouldn't be bothering with studies

I always park a car in gear. Especially cars Im not used to because the handbrake might not work

The car was parked correctly, it was the tree which moved.

Haha atleast this guy/girl hit a tree. Someone left their polo with the handbrake down a few months ago, it rolled and hit another car

That's pretty normal for an Audi, considering how close they get to the rear of other cars on the road.

haha this bring back memories of my moms old B7 2.0tdi.
We had quite a steep driveway, she parked it and pulled the handbrake up and all seemed fine, about 2 hours later I heard her screaming that her car had been stolen ...
found it in the driveway across the street, neighbors not impressed.
