Hi all

I just wanted to ask for some advice on this issue...

For the past couple weeks my Exchange server First storage device keeps on unmounting itself and not only that but my Backup server keeps on failing when it comes to backing up my exchange server...

What would cause my database to keep doing this???

Please help as this is becoming a major issue of late.

Thanks

it could be a conflict between the backup software and the Exchange Store. have a look at the windows error logs and see if the times are the same. eg, the exchange store unmounts at the same time that the back software starts to backup the Exchange.

ive had some weird errors with exchange. i now host it on a Hyper-V VM and backup the whole Vm. :-) no exchange recovery time.

Thanks Tsimo I came across this message in the event logs
Message =MSExchangeIS (1704) First Storage Group: Online defragmentation of database 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database.edb' was interrupted and terminated. The next time online defragmentation is started on this database, it will resume from the point of interruption.

however my second storage group is functioning perfectly... I am also using Backup Exec 11d and as I dont have notifications on the backups that are completing... I checked today and noticed that my exchange backups have been failing since monday... and those backups only take place at around 10pm and finish at around 11:30pm whereas on the exchange it does some online defrag at around 1am-5am... so i do not know where the conflictions come into play...:(

try suspending the backup one night and restarting the Information store service that night before the online defrag runs. clear the application logs before you restart and see if the store dismounts that night again. that would rule out the backup software.

I have scheduled a down time today at around 5pm so that I can have the exchange up and running ASAP.... could this also be due to the First storage being not only the primary box but also a 344gig storage device??? and therefore disconnecting after that 1hr period lapses due to its size??

it could that the disk queue is too long but it would then croak during high load. i still think the most likely culprit is backup exec, since in my experience with it it caused weird stuff sometimes. all exchange trouble shooting is a process of elimination. start at the easy and work your way up to the hard and obscure. :-)

The strange thing is.... this only seems to affect everything on the weekend.... during the week everything is fine but like sat and sun and sometimes on mon thats when the ***** hits the fan and I just dont get it....

That would suggest that something else is running over the weekend, like mailbox maintenance?

Well thats exactly what is running but that runs everyday :p however it only seems to be affected mainly on Sat and Sun and it also happened yesterday.... however it seems to be that in that time frame that the Online Defrag runs... should the time window close then the defrag is automatically cancelled and the defrag is interrupted therefore causing it to stay unmounted and causing you to manually mount it yourself....

I change the Defrag time allocation yesterday and checked the logs this morning I found that everything went through 100% as well as my backups which were affected by this problem last week.... but i will continue to monitor the logs just in case... Thanks for the help guys i'll let you know if I have a problem ;)
