Exchange Selection

I have noticed today that if I type my telephone number into http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/search/phone/ , that I am connecting to an exchange which is almost 4+ km's away. This when the area I am living in has an exchange less than 1 km from my house as the crow flies. :confused:

Why would Telkom do such a thing? And secondly is it possible to have your line moved to a different exchange?

In the good ole days Telkom would tolerate 'foreign feeds' to a customer outside of their normal exchange area. This has since been stopped and all customers are connected to the exchange linked via its cable infrastructure.

Example: exchange A to SDC A1 to DP A1 to customer, even though SDC B1 linked to exchange B is closer to the customer. In the past they could, with the proper approval, link the customer to a DP that links to SDC B2 and to exchange B.
 
Ok. Correct me if I am wrong, but do I understand correctly in saying that me who is in suburb Y, which is connected to suburb Z's exchange, would be considered a 'foreign feed' if I connect to suburb Y's exchange which is my suburbs exchange as it shares the suburb name.

Or maybe the problem I am foreseeing here is that even though the exchange shares the same name as my suburb, it is not necessarily the suburbs primary exchange?

That answered my question completely. So my cabinet/pillar I am connecting to is connecting to my current exchange. And thus, it is not as easy as just moving to another exchange. It has to be physically rewired/routed.
