Hi all,

First post on here, but I did do a quick search on the forums, and (unless I'm daft) I can't find anything related. I've had iburst for almost a week now, and here's the situation:

I'm battling to download executable files for some reason, and I don't know if it's unique. Finally got both my PCs on the net after installing a proxy and firewall (using W2K, but I can't get ICS going). I had no problems downloading before (upto earlier today), and even now some files download (firefox installer). However, if I try to download some files off TUCOWS or MS websites, and even QQ, it just sits there for a while, and then finishes with only between 20-40k of the file downloaded.

I did stop both the firewall and proxy services (briefly, after my one PC was completely trashed this week by worms and spyware), and tried again, but to no avail.

I also considered that it might be the same (unresolved) issue that some users had with the FXCM trading software (I also had that issue), but the number of files this happens with is odd.

Any ideas? I'm running FreeProxy and Sygate Personal Firewall.

Thanks!

Regards,

Following on...

Hi again,

Playing around a bit more. Just managed to download flashplayer 7 plugin (also .exe) with no worries, but the Bittorrent installer is giving me hassles, as are .torrent files. There was no problem with these yesterday. This happens even if I work directly to the internet (no proxy).

Forgot to mention in the previous mail: I'm sitting close to the Rosebank and Killarney towers, with very good signal and speeds.

Regards,

I think I recall someone doing a demo on forum, pretty much proving that IBurst were doing something to block or perhaps prevent .torrent files from being downloaded..?
Not sure, torrents arent my thing. Use the forum search, to see the many threads about torrents+Iburst..

I would say so. Tried on two different iBursts in two different locations and no issues.

My gut says firewall/proxy/anti-virus causing the problem.
Maybe spyware as well.

Is it happening to other protocols as well, say mail?
Is it happening to ZIP files?

Other iBurst users have stated they have a problem with .torrent files before. Seems to be caused by WBS's transparent proxy

thats no longer the case, about .torrent's being blocked.

It's hard to diagnose this problem, what are you using to download these files and when clickign a .torrent link what message do you get, is it something like 'no data recieved' or somethign else?

Problem kinda solved

Hi-ho,

OK, the post about it being the proxy/firewall seems to be potentially correct. I connected the modem via USB to my other PC, and downloads are happening fine. .torrents (seed files) are also good, except the client takes forever to actually start the file download.

Will probably have to go play with the proxy software. Does anyone have an idea for good software? I have (as yet) been unable to get native connection sharing going between my win2k boxes. It gets as far as finding the site, and then just sits there forever. ICQ and ping seems to work tho. I've followed all directions on this (from the forums and the net). If anyone has any thoughts on this, feel free to share ;)

In the meantime, I'm working on getting my linux box going as a router, but that has a whole different set of issues related to it (most of them outside the scope of these forums).

software for torrents? if so then you cant go wrong with azureus, it gives maximum control which is a must because we have shaping on the bittorrent protocol,. and it supports trackerless swarms which is good because some of the packet shaping problems are due to tracker communication, which might be part of the reason your downloads take a long time to start.

Thread turning into...

Heh,

It would seem this thread is now turning into a running update :)

Got the problem sorted. For some reason, it would seem to have direct relation to the use of the second network card in my server PC, which I had the modem connected to. Will go see now if there are any posted problems with that card.

slimothy: Did you guys resolve those issues with the FXCM software?

The free version of Zone Alarm doesn't support Internet Connection Sharing (I'm assuming you are using Windows :) ). So maybe stick to Sygate.

Software

I'm gonna try and get hold of squid, but sygate seems to be working quite well. What's nice is I don't have to presetup anything - everytime something wants to access the network, it asks me first, and I can then set it to permanently allow the connection from that software.

Of course, on my server PC I have to be carefull to tell it to allow anything from the proxy software :)

The download problems have definitely been sorted - just picked up another network card to sort out the problems which have now been shifted to my internal network by swapping the cards.

Regards,
