I have just called 10219 to enquire about the free modem offer being available for existing ADSL users wishing to switch to "do broadband". I was astounded by the reply I got which was that to get the free modem you have to cancel your existing ADSL line (30 days notice) then re-apply for an ADSL line (30 working days wait). If anyone knows different to this please let me know.

Yup, apparently the deal is only available to 'new' subscribers. Trust me, I've been down this road.

You can switch to do packages without canceling your line, they just wont give you a free modem.

Switching to other ISP's all in one packages without canceling your line is coming soon apparently.:D (then you get a modem without canceling)

Remember if you cancel and then re-apply and your exchange is full, your line will get assigned to the next person waiting for an adsl line. You will be at the back of the queue waiting for months to get a line again.

If you really really want to get the free modem and make sure your have no downtime or loose your adsl spot on your exchange, do this:

  • Apply for another voice line.
  • Have adsl activated on it with your package and get your free modem.
  • Cancel you existing line.
  • Have your original number transfered to the new line.

But seriously, a free Telkom router is not something you really want. I was upset when I applied for adsl and they gave it to me, because then I couldn't justify spending money on a router that I wanted which I had budgeted for. (atleast I had more drinking money :D)
