Was chatting to an acquaintance this weekend who has worked at SARS for a long time. Sounds like a horror story unfolding there with almost everyone leaving/looking for new work. The witch hunt is not on for any evidence against Pravin. Multiple staff have found out that their phones are tapped and the hawks are targetting any individual associated with the spy unit in an attempt to blackmail them for dirt.
One guy had the hawks dig into his emails. They found a dirty joke sent to him in 2007 that included a naked young boy. The guy never forwarded it to anyone nor requested it but also did not delete it. The hawks used that to lay child porn charges against him and use that to try get him to give dirt on Pravin Gordan. Really sickening stuff happening there now. The worst part is that the hawks, who should be tracking down real organised crime, are instead being used as the personal police force of Zuma.
Best part of it is that this whole rogue spy unit is a load of crap. Sars has always had investigative units who try track down tax evaders and have mostly worked in tandem with the hawks (and scorpions previously) in surveilance and investigation into potential tax evaders. Its really not that super secret and new, its been going forever and is part of their core function and as such has been down with full knowledge of law enforcement and the government for as long as they have been opperating.
The cost to SA of this stuff will be huge. SARS is losing all its skilled people and that will drop tax revenue further cripling the already strained budget.
