Exotic Animals

Jirre dude, I stayed on that hill in Constantia Kloof. I'm glad I moved now :p

I saw a kid with one of those at a resort once, he caught it. Small little thing but I didn't want to get near it. Well he said it was a "Rooi lippie" as it was an off silver colour with a red lower jaw. A KID CATCHING A WILD SNAKE! WTF is up with today's kids?

Dont you know bindie ? Daughter of steve, she used to do it at a young age. Snakes im fine with, i hate spiders, i dont mind if they're in the garden or some ****. Just not on me.

As a kid I caught one of those at a resort. 15 or so at the time.

Ok so scratch that idea. I want to try and face the fear head on by catching a snake. But the ones on the farm is mostly Mambas. Is there a place one can do these courses? Maybe just for safety?

Get a corn snake or something for your kids. They`ll love you more for it. Children love them. They like showing their friends at school even more :D Dont try face your fear with snakes you dont know their identity or that are dangerous.

Never forget, if you back up from a snake it will almost always run away from you :D Its more scared of you than you are of it.

I Highly doubt that :o

But I'm seriously going to go on one of these courses. If it's any good will send the farm workers too. Even if just to help them treat someone that has been bitten, do's and don'ts I suppose.

I have no problem with them. In my previous house, I had a small snake living in my garden. Don't know what he was, but he was very welcome. I will never kill a snake if I can possibly help it. There are organisations of reptile fanciers I believe that can remove snake to safety if you call them. I have a number on my fridge. Alas, snakes are rare in suburbia, poor things.

Thats pretty awesome. Most people just kill them and they are under threat as they run out of habitat.

Near PE there is a cement producer with a unique species of adder. Its entire habitat range is in the lime stone on this cement producers property. We have been out there a couple of times already but we still need to go out several more times. Basically we have to save as many of these little buggers as possible because their entire habitat is going to be destroyed in the next 5 years. We cant even release them into the wild again as they have very specific requirements and outside of their habitat they die quickly.

We learnt this the hard way. PE snake park tried to keep two alive but during the process they died. There are 6 now in captivity and thriving, but we need as many as possible so the gene pool does not dilute too much. These little buggers will only be available in captivity in the future, but at least they wont be extinct.

Yeah, you should buy some snake tongs off BoB then. Cause no matter what, you shouldnt get near a snake like a mamba unless you are trained and have one of those. The mamba is a very difficult snake to drive :D (thats what we call it when we are trying to manage a large venomous snake like a large mamba or large cobra)

O ffs,

Seems like I missed one that was in August. You guys that frequent that site, can you please notify me if there is another course again?

Only topic I could find in that messy forum design :o. Please I will appreciate it. Seems like a market leader in the research that is giving the course as well. For the time being will probably just be me and the Farm manager. Please I would appreciate it.

That forum is a bit dated but a super useful forum. Very well known biologists and zoologists post and follow that forum. Nature Conservation is even on it. It is no mybb but super useful.

I see I am still a "founding member" on there. Before child wife and I were rather into the reptile thing.
