Exotic Animals

Really, I thought you said this as well, "but I have a serious issue with wild mammals in private homes" and "I am totally opposed to the keeping of exotic mammals as pets" and "but how many private breeders breed to save a species? Mmm? More likely to get loads of bucks as you bragged about earlier"

If you didnt say those things then your oversized font makes sense :)
Because I don't believe that outside of a good zoo or rehabiltation facility, wild (exotic) mammals should be bred privately in a private home for sale to other private homes, because, let's face it, thats why they are breeding, no for advancement of the species. let's be realistic.
Just because Bob Smith ensures Chloe has a good life, it doesn't mean Pete, who gets one of her babies, will.
It's like these people who allow their cats to get pregnant: "Oh but they all have homes: my sister and my mom and my cousin will all take one". Trouble is sister and mom and cousin probably won't get these kittens fixed and the cycle repeats. How many good homes are available for unplanned kittens? Very few, I can tell you that.
Same will happen - is happening - for exotic animals as the trend and demand grows. Original cost of animal in the end doesn't matter when the animal gets too much too handle. Persian rescue is filled to the brim with extremely expensive unwanted cats, also bengals so the same will happen to unwanted exotics in time.

Got a fright when I saw the pic. I was like, cool, let me check what's been happen- JEEZUS!

:D

You can see the "I'm going to bite you in the face little kid" in the snake's eyes. You also see the uncertainty in the girls eyes. Snakes freak me out. I can take anything, snakes however... /kill

I know I know. They scare my shyteless, I will never be able to sleep if I know the bastard is in the house or even close.

Again with blanket statements you are totally unqualified to make. Many mammals domesticate very well and are happy. Like Sloths and Hedgehogs. This is what I was reffering to with you making unqualified blanket statements.

So ban cats thens. Once you get that right then you can start on exotic animal owners. Doing this the other way comes across as hypocritical. Expecially when you have 0 knowledge on the needs or requirements of those animals.

Someone who gets a R50 000 sloth, is more likely to look after their animal than someone who gets a freebie cat.

So to sum it up, a sloth domesticates very well. Easy to look after in your home. They dont run away... well they dont run. Sloth owners are more likely to be responsible than cat owners. If a sloth gets out there is 0 chances of hybrizidation and if not found it will die (so 0 negative impact to the local environment) . So before you go after people who wanna look after sloths.... start with the cats. If people cant own exotic animals why should you be allowed to own a cat?

Also, someone who gets a R50 000 sloth, is more likely to look after their animal than someone who gets a freebie cat. Also, if the sloth gets out, it wont cause havok to the environment like domestic cats. It will die.
1. How do you know I am not qualified? Just because you breed snakes in a tank, you are an expert?
2. How do you propose do this? Don't be silly.
3. For now, as I mentioned before you get many people with more money than sense. http://www.nspca.co.za/page/exotic-pets http://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/range-of-exotic-animals-in-gauteng-yards-1.671112
Obviously there are problems. As far as I am concerned, the average South African, with our slapgat approach to animal rights, is unqualified to own an exotic pet, let alone a domestic pet.

From the really out of touch statements you are making. Notice how you repeat this misleading statement even after I corrected you in a previous post. Dodgy dude.... dodgy.

Qualified and respectable Nature conservationists wouldnt be making silly statements like banning everyone from owning exotic animals.

Yeah, I notice its silly all of a sudden when its an animal you like. How convinent for you. You get to keep the pets you want to keep, but screw everyone else.

Yes you do. Cats and dogs included.

Oh yeah, and NSPCA are a joke. Ill support my local SPCA but not the national body which seems to be on divine mission from PETA. They are really losing it. Which is why I refuse to raise money for NSPCA events anymore (and last year I raised R50 000). But so little of that money actually gets to the local offices, and their policies are becoming hysterical and uniformed. So now we just support the local guys with buying food.

Luckily we have sane orginizations like Nature Conservation. People actually qualified in exotic animals. Not volunteers who think they know whats best for everyone. Qualified herpotologists and zoologists that know whats best for the animal. Nature conservation are also the only legal authority with these exotic animals. Makes sense as they are also the only authority with the correct skills.

I often agree. Which is why exotic animals dont often end up in average households. They generally end up in the homes of serious animal lovers.

Not good enough and I don't believe you. The fact that there is still illegal trade going on makes me think there is plenty of the usual corruption going on. That is what I have an issue with.

You have an issue with people owning animals you dont. Simple as that. What you believe is irrelevant. You get the illegal trade in EVERYTHING. Dogs and cats included.

Thank goodness we have nature con to protect us from irrational views. (generally)

So I am not allowed to voice my opinion on the illegal trade in exotic animals? I must just keep quiet because I don't own or ever would want to own a bloody sloth or a hedgehog?

You dont have your martyr robe on right. You need to look more victimized if want people to feel sorry for you. jk!

No one wants to take your right to have an opinion. Just dont be surprised when people shoot down bad opinions. Just like you have a right to voice your beliefs. Others have the right to counter or correct them.

Who shot down my opinion? You just keep on harping on the wonders of Nature Conservation and stating I am mistaken without offering any real evidence to the contrary. And then using insults to shut me up.

Wow, okay, this discussion now pointless.

What you said to me is the number one thing people tell me about snakes. A conversation normally goes like this:

Me: Hey I like snakes.
Person: I killed one
Me: :(

hehe

You are right. Im way too easily sucked into this stuff :/

How the fk does one build up the courage to hold a snake? Not even to mention catching venomous ones ?

I go to the snake park in Harties and I feel like I want to pass out just taking the kids through the glass enclosures the snakes are in. I normally just shoot at them from a distance on the farm. Those Black mamba's are some seriously large snakes... You have to be born with this kind of snake handling thing I suppose?

Wish I had the space and resources for a sloth. It'd be like looking into a mirror. :D

How often do you get to feed them?

I'll do you one better. Back when I was laaitie during the holidays I went to the library. I had no idea there was gonna be snake handler doing a presentation there. So I go to join the other kids listening to him, stood near him, saw a snake in his arms and dashed outta there. :D

Not sure, I got over my fear as a kid. I guess I became more and more familiar with them. Only someone who has done a course in venemous snake handling should try catch a venemous snake. A good place to start would be to learn the difference between the venemous ones and the harmless ones as 90% of them are harmless.

Get a little girl at the snake park to let you hold a harmless snake. Just chill there with a bit with it. Familiarity will start making you more comfy.

You normally always have food out for them. They eat when they want to. 2/3rds of a sloths weight comes from the food in its tummy. Luckily they are easy to feed.

Includes, cats, dogs, birds, sloths AND hedgehogs.

All animals deserve space in our homes (okay, perhaps not ebola... but most). There are more than just cats and dogs out there that are looking for loving homes.
