Was at a herpetological meeting as a snake park today and saw this little tank. He was camera shy so I returned him to his garden.

Nice one - baby angulate?

Thats is exactly it.

Awesome news for EC herpetologists. There has been very reasonable progression in the laws and they might get changed soon.. If this goes through, animals like corn snakes will no longer require permits. Also finally EC can get animals like bearded dragons or panther chameleons.

I was out at an animal sanctuary today (chatting to nature conservation) and they showed me this beautiful animal (panther chameleon).

As soon as they are legal I want to get a pair.

That's beautiful. I'm a big chameleon fan. I managed to get two flap necked chameleon's to breed when I was younger - she had 59 eggs and died from exhaustion trying to dig her nest. I did a caesarean and put the eggs into pearlite while keeping an eye on them from time to time. Around 52 of the 59 eggs hatched. At the time I think it was a record (59 eggs from a flap-necked).

We don't see nearly as many dwarf chameleons as we used to when I was a kid. Habitat is disappearing fast. There was one subspecies that had only been recorded in one neighbourhood in PE once upon a time - chances are it's now extinct.

The newest edition to the family. This little bugger is a Leopard Gecko. They are found naturally in Pakistan.

awesome thread this gents... myself i dont own any exotic pets.. but its a good read to see what you guys are owning..

What this country sorely needs is unity among national nature conservation. Provincial chapters need to follow suit - it needs to be managed from the top down. Someone I know brought their pet Sungazers from the Freestate to EL and local nature conservation confiscated them and destroyed them I believe. Two different set of rules - and they dragged their heels on awarding his permit - eventually they refused it.

agreed all provinces need to be managed with the same legislature ...

My latest addition: Rhino (unicorn) Rat Snake.

Its ancestors were saved from a meat market in Vietnam. Very cool animal, she likes swimming in a heated water bowl and when she sits in her tree (as she is arboreal) she bobs her head back and forth like a leaf in the wind. She also can hold her breath for a long time and do a good dead leaf impersonation :D

I have a new found respect for ghoti. Any man that can handle a snake... /respect.

I have close on 20 reptiles, mostly snakes :D Though its no biggy to manage them. For some strange reason, boys are more scared of snakes than girls. This pic was taken at a friends bday party the other day.

Snakes are not even half near as bad as people think they are.

I collect rare animals that I can provide a good habitat for. Im not really into breeding them for profit. Some mates of mine breed for profit and make a lot of money. The rarer snakes we work with often cost around R40 000 - R150000 . They generally have between 8-12 babies a year. So if you have a pair of R40k snakes, you making around R400 000 off them a year.

Friends with Arno?

You don't require their flesh to survive. There is no way you could claim that you need meat as a middle class South African to survive. If you're not eating meat for survival, what are you eating it for?

If you dont need meat why do you have canines?

I don't know anything about exotic reptiles, so I can't comment. But I am totally opposed to the keeping of exotic mammals as pets due to the prevalence of backyard breeders, unethical breeding practices, owner neglect, unsuitable habitats, animal trafficking, etc.
I also have a problem with birds in capitivity, but I don't feel like getting into an argument about it.

These are my favorite animals. Theyre Ball Pythons (you can see in the pictures how they get their name)

This is the male... he is very shy:

We call him Tickles

This is the female... she is aggressive and likes to dominate the male.

We call her Tess

If you wanna know how we came up with their names.... Well, theyre Ball Pythons.... TessTickles :D

Both are Captive Bred.

I once called a pet rat tickles for similar reasons...
