Exotic Animals

I have a Marmoset monkey. I am not one for taking monkeys and the like out of nature but this one was born whilst preperations were well on their way with a couple going overseas. Anyhow they couldn't take the baby and we adopted him.

He is like my son and I love him to bits.2013-10-02 17.01.04.jpg

Why have I never thought of a sloth as a pet ?

ghoti... Keep us informed with how that goes, if you do get them...

Very cool! Are monkeys not high maintenance though?

Will do so. I spoke to nature conservation at tonight's herpetology braai/meeting. He has never heard of someone getting any in, but doesnt know of any legal reasons why it should not be allowed. He did mention I am going to have to do a ton of paperwork. This is a long term plan, and will cost over 100k, so dont hold your breath. I will keep you updated.

On the upside I added a Pueblan Milk Snake and a Rosy Tailed Boa to my collection tonight.

You guys in Durbs are so lucky. You dont have the insane regulation we have here in the Eastern Cape :/

I have a few tarantulas :) Lovely pets, easy to care for and very interesting. :)

I have the following:
Three Green Bottle Blues: link
Two Mexican fire legs link
A Mexican red knee link

Love these little guys. Did you know spiders shed their skin (molting) as they grow? Amazing to see

This is my sand boa:

I couldnt bring the milksnake home tonight because of permits and Im only picking up the rosy tailed boa tomorrow (cause of permits). I got the Rosy Tailed Boa at a steal. R250.

Do your snakes have names?

Yes.

We call the corn, "Artemis", the Sand Boa is Ares (our cats are Athena and Aphrodite).

Im getting a bit bored with the mythological names so I think I am going to call the milksnake, "bubbles" and the rosy tailed boa, "fluffy".

Turns out my Rosy Tailed Boa is actually a Boa Imperator. This little bugger can grow up to be 3m big!

"A Savannah cat is a cross between a domestic cat and the serval, a medium-sized, large-eared wild African cat."

Stupidly expensive though...

Also there are no SAVANNAH cats in RSA, it is against the law to breed them here, you will get scammed.

sucks :(

Im getting my pueblan milk snake on Tuesday (when permits are ready). Pretty excited. Ive got enough variety in my species now to start breeding them when they grow up.

I want a pig, personally.

I had one, they are awesome to keep but you need to be sure the pig has a place of it's own.
They are not that good with children (biting and bumping are part of their greeting as an example).

They are very smart and can be a bit hard headed.
Unlike dogs you can teach them new tricks their whole lives.

Feeding is no longer all that cheap (we are an importer of grain products now, no longer an exporter) but always, from childhood feed them adult pig food, the piglet food is designed to make them grow as fast as possible and they end up with a 3 to 5 year life span as opposed to a 20 to 35 year life span.

They do not need to eat as much as they would want to eat but will however eat any food that you give them (excluding citrus and a few other things) and this can also be bad for their health and you end up with a very stinky sty as most of the excess just passes through.

If you give them a nice big kennel filled to the brim with solid bales of hay they will dig out a nest in it which is perfect for winter.

They need plenty shade and a mudhole/small pond/kiddies pool as they can not sweat.

Even a regular pig would be fine, as pigs are such intelligent and majestic creatures. But yes, a pot-bellied would be great. Imagine the chicks you could pick up with such a cute beast!

lol, a 70KG-170kg bulldozer is not easy to keep on a leash :p
