Exotic Animals

Pig **** smells really bad though. I wonder if they're trainable to 'go' only outside?

Only if you feed them to much or rubbish, also a pig always chooses one part of it's sty to use as a toilet, if you keep it indoors it will choose a spot outside.

If you feed them properly they make little bokdrollitjies that smell like almost nothing.

How about a Ferret, where can one get these> been looking for one for a long time ? Capture.PNG

Had the obligatory hamsters, birds, fish, snakes, spiders etc. over the years..

Fav was a hand-reared Indian Myna who never became completely tame (compared to the cockatiel who had total freedom of the house) and could out-talk any parrot. Also had a sense of humour as he would regularly call the dogs inside using my voice as a joke.

Second was a pot-bellied pig called Lulu who was fully housetrained but was a bit rough on the garden. Lawn & beds suffered 'cos pigs like rooting so we eventually demarcated her a private space with her own mud pool. Pigs aren't dirty at all, Lulu loved the pool although she usually well, screamed like a pig while in the water.

Nowadays I'd like one of these if I didn't already have a dog & 2 cats ..

And various other things.

My Wife has about 7 or 8 spiders now (I lost count) and my daughter has 2 hissing roaches.
That is it currently besides "normal" pets.

Do any of you keep any weird and wonderful exotic animals?

Currently I have some pretty average animals like a Kenyan Sand Boa and a Corn Snake. Im considering importing a breeding pair of sloths. They apparently make wonderful house animals. They are playful (as a sloth can be). They dont mess up the furniture. They get along with the other animals. They poop and pee once a week (they come down to a litter box for this, as they dig a hole then cover it up).

I know some people have major issues with keeping exotic animals (these people normally own a dog and/or cat), but I feel if you can give an animal a good home and you can breed your animals so it increases the population, then that will help the species.

What weird and wonderful animals do you look after?

This was my pig:

Awesome collection!

Love your imperator boa, he is a king.

What are those other snakes? Not sure if they rat snakes or venomous. Some of them look like cobras.

Picked up my milksnake today. Super happy with him.

We had 3 boas' all female.
Rest are rat snakes, various king snakes and some false water cobras.

lol, sold our last boa to a guy in Mpumalanga, he had it for a week, she escaped and ate the neighbours persian then spat it back out again.

They found her again and as the cat was in his yard the neighbours could do nothing about it.

I want a meerkat, but it seems impossible to get a permit in Gauteng.

I think getting a zoo keepers licence may be easier :)

Yep. The only way seems to be to keep it illegally, and I'm not going to flout the law on this one.

That said, most sources say that they are terrible pets - jealous, mark their territory (and owner/keeper), prone to bite guests... I would still like to have one, though. :o

Pygmy Hedgehogs

We are not allowed those here in the eastern cape. Apparently we have a local species here in the Eastern Cape and until ecological impact studies have been done. You can not get a permitted hedgehog here. That does not stop hundreds of them been sold on gumtree :/

Personally I do not deal with anything that could piss of nature conservation. I have a very good relationship with them and would prefer to keep it that way.
