Expanding Universe - Question

If you expand a balloon, what is it expanding into? Nothing... it's just a balloon getting bigger and bigger...

I disagree.

The universe IS 3Dspace, matter+energy and time. It's is expanding into the nothingness, where there is NO 3Dspace, matter+energy and time.

I don't have a better illustration for 'nothingness' because humans can't envision real nothingness. We understand the word but not the concept.

It's not 3D and you're wrong. It's just expanding. See my above post.

I've been reading a bit. And I am now convinced otherwise.

And I disagree again with you and with myself.

The universe isn't expanding, but rather stretching. The example used is galaxies that are in a stationary position but are drifting away from one another not because of the universe expanding but rather because the universe is stretching.

But I still believe there is something true about the nothingness. Ok the 3D part may be wrong (there are many more dimensions.

BAH you ignorant fools! Am I the only one who sees that the universe is not expanding? Its just compressing from the centre outward!

To understand how the Universe is expanding, you will need to learn to understand quantum theory. Which nobody actually does.
But you will be able to rattle off a bunch of important-sounding phrases, and maybe even write complex-looking maths on a chalk board.
And grow your hair long, and hang out with celebs.

Once you've answered the question of what the universe is expanding into, you can sort out another issue - what was there before the Big Bang?

And please remember me for suggesting all this, when you go to Stockholm, and also to collect your X-Prize for Cosmology.

Then there are the Multiverse theory, so maybe there are something in the nothing ;)

Maybe we are all plugged into a computer interface and are seeing things created by some higher power.

Maybe we are all Sims? Like a super version??

But in all seriousness there must be more than just OUR "universe"!

What if there is another.

This would would just spawn the same question again. Because things that are more than one can only exist in containment and thus a whole new "'universe'with these 'universes' in".

I have no clue what you are saying but im sure you are on to something :D

I've always wanted to get some clarity on this, is it that the universe (in its totality) is expanding or just that matter (stars, galaxies) within the universe are drifting apart?

I'm more into the latter, because the universe is everything that exists (including some degree of nothingness) so it can't really expand, maybe grow or stretch as suggested earlier

Dunno if you guys watch the documentary "the universe" - it basically explained that the universe is expanding, i.e. distance between planets and stars is increasing. And the rate of expansion is also increasing. Which means pretty soon (in cosmological terms :p) the universe will be a pretty lonely place - hence the nothingness.

My question is if the universe is expanding, and space is infinite, what is beyond the known universe?

Actually 4D if one takes time into account.

I'm not sure what the difference between stretching and expanding is but I think I get what you're trying to say.

Actually, strange that you mentioned this, because lately I have been wondering something similar. What if this world we're living in is a dream? We are plugged into some simulator and given thoughts/realities and we wake up from this dream when we die. Because then if you take religion into account for all the things they say regarding our lives that everything is planned for us (like a simulator/movie) and that if we want something we need to just sincerely ask for it, that makes me think that the simulator can be given new things to make us feel those things we asked for. This is only one small and probably bad example, but there are so many others. When I sit and think about life and the universe, it's just too confusing and mind-numbing.
I mean, how do we know this is not a dream? When we're dreaming, that seems real too, so how do we know this is not a dream too? Food for thought.
