Hawks arrest suspect in Experian data breach that exposed data of 23 million South Africans

The Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime unit arrested a 36 years old suspect this morning in Gauteng following an investigation into the data breach at credit bureau Experian in August 2020, the South African Police Service said in a statement.

According to the Hawks, the suspect pretended to be Tebogo Mogashoa, a director of Talis Holdings, and entered into a contract with Experian for access to the personal information that the credit bureau holds on millions of people.

You can't they've made it nearly impossible to find. They've had the torrents and dark web links removed.
That's just great.
The crims can find it easily but potential victims are just told "Sorry, not our fault.Tough tiddies if you get wrecked. But remember, not our fault so there."

Well its not like I am not looking. I have a lot at stake, especially since some motherf**ker took out a personal loan with FNB on my name and I am now having to prove to these Experian c*nts I did not take the loan at any stage as I am with another bank. Also at the time I didn't qualify for credit either due to having lost my job

Sorry man. Yeah it's some BS.
Maybe MyBB can verify whether your details appears there or not. They were able to contact companies , should be able to run a search on individuals surely?

The thing is, I just don't have the time. Sure, years ago when some site got breached I was easily able to find a torrent of the breached data, but that stuff usually runs in to the hundreds of gigabytes. Not in the mood to download that on the off chance that my information is in there. But with the Experian hack, I can't be bothered to scroll through hundreds of possible torrent files or dark web links with the risk of one of them being highly illegal content disguised as Experian's data breach

Experian f**ked up they better do something to remediate the situation, but its a typical American corporate... so yea..

So how can we check if our info is in there?

You need to assume that your information has been breached. They are a credit bureau. The have information on all credit active citizens. In addition, they are all have access to or physical copies of Home Affairs databases integrated into their data for verification purposes. So, if you are a SA citizen, resident, credit active or not, assume your information is in public hands.

Its nice that they nabbed the 36 year old but what about Experian? Business as usual for them?
No fines, no ramifications
Can carry on their lives being the leaky organization that they are

No, why? Under which acts last year?

Have a look at:
I only see 1,284,637 accounts is listed there (due to other accounts not having a email account associated).

And then:
“The suspect then proceeded to download approximately 23 million personal data records and 727,000 business records. The suspect then attempted to sell these records at about R4.2 million,” the Hawks stated.
.....
Experian South Africa CEO Ferdie Pieterse said the data breach exposed the personal details of 23.4 million South Africans and 607,000 businesses.

Interesting stuff.
