Hi Fellow members

I am urgent need of some expert help. Perhaps someone here can assist or refer me to someone who can assist.

My father has a small business with 8 staff members. He has major problems with the staff on youtube, facebook and various other sites. They are non productive and I am in need of someone that can assist with the setup and access restrictions.

Basic setup in the office consists of one small server (server2008) that runs their application and for networking they have a ADSL Router with a hub attached that basically feeds Lan cables to the pc's in the office.

Now I know that there will be some major changes that will need to be change possibly.

Is their any expert that can possibly assist. I don't expect this to be free either.

Are all the computers owned by the company?
Just install a keylogger on each computer.

BTW, it is probably not a good idea to completely block ALL their access to fun sites, as that tends to kill the mood in the office. Instead offer them a "reasonable" amount of access.... (like they can check facebook for ten minutes every few hours or so). Giving that staff a ten minute break here and there, can actually be good for productivity.

If you think you are capable, you can install Squid proxy on a spare pc to manage network and internet traffic and then block traffic based on IP rules or address. Squid proxy will take time to set up, but once done and done correctly, it will be beneficial in the long run if you have needs for logs and reports, etc. Otherwise a capable router should be able to do a wholesale blanket block of any websites you add to its restriction list. The Cisco RV042 is one such router capable of blocking websites.

depending on your router, you can block sites on there. (Netgear has this feature)

AFAIK you can schedule it too.

Agreed, cutting off the "fun" side of the internet probably isn't a good idea, limit it with a sort of time constraint.

Linux Distros Zentyal and ClearOS are pretty easy to install on a spare PC with 2 network cards and include squid proxy with a content filter. There are others: Endian, IPCOP, Untangle etc (but I haven't really played with these and exact features vary.)

You could also go with a proprietory hardware solution for firewall/proxy/UTM gateway. I had some fairly acceptable quotes on Sonicwall gateways a couple of years ago.

Register on OpenDNS and block the sites from there. Using your dhcp server assign 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 as the clients dns servers or add these ip addresses onto DNS settings on your router and you are good to go. This will be for all the devices on the network. Select which categories to block on OpenDNS and you will be sorted.
Register as a home user and it will be free.

Hi Solospike,

The company I work for designs advanced filtering technologies used by quite a number of schools, large corporates and government organizations around the world to filter the browsing of users on their network. It supports detection of pretty much any kind of proxy site, has various types of transparent communication interception and a whack more features.

Feel free to drop me a PM :)

Just setup OpenDNS with its update script and you block websites via there system

Process is easy, and will cost you nothing :

1. Register www.opendns.com
2. Setup their DNS servers on your ADSL router, and Server
3. Run their update program on your server or PC inside the network
4. Configure OpenDNS via their interface to block what you want
5. Sit back and listen to the complaints.

And anyone with half a brain will only do one Google to figure out they can simply put manual DNS server entries in.

Most consumer ADSL Routers also don't allow you to force DNS to a preset server and block all other calls.

OpenDNS is an easy fix...but not a complete one.

This is by far the simplest and free solution. OP, you can't be that blond. Download your router's manual and block the sites from there. Or let it allow all traffic only during lunch times.

Setup a squid proxy - its easy. You can block the sites and then will have a audit trail as well.

Currently you can't fire someone for browsing porn.
1) Do did nothing to stop it.
2) You dont have any logs showing they were browsing porn.
