- Broadband performance is often measured using speedtest.net (For iBurst the best local server to use is the Midrand server hosted by Neology, and the best international server is the Newbury server hosted by Vodafone.) iBurst has it's own speedtest sever at speedtest.iburst.co.za (with an extensive version at http://196.2.97.51/all. Mybroadband hosts a speedtest server at speedtest.mybroadband.co.za. Alternatives also exist at Neotel, Cell C, MWEB and Internet Solutions.
- An indication of latency for gaming and VoIP is obtained using pingtest.net. If you are serious about measuring latency use mtr on UNIX or WinMTR on Windows. Once installed you can measure latency to:
+ speedtest.iburst.co.za (local iBurst latency)
+ mybroadband.co.za (local ZA latency)
+ bbc.com (international latency via west coast)
+ cnn.com (international latency via east coast)
+ www.techcentral.co.za (latency via JINX)
+ www.news24.com (latency via CINX)
- These are the typical path latencies associated with:
+ East coast
+ West coast
When you do a tracert or use WinMTR you can determine that path as the east coast path is serviced via Telia and the west coast path by Cogent.
- You should be able to watch video such as http://www.nasa.gov/55644main_NASATV_Windows.asx or radio such as http://www.702.co.za/onair/tunein.asp on your connection if your signal is optimized.
- The problem with web browsers and downloading is that they are often not optimal. The method to optimize download speeds is to use a download manager. The different browsers can be optimized as follows:
+ Firefox can be optimized with the DTA add-on.
+ Chrome can be optimized using Google Download Assistant and FlashGet.
- Mipony is a free download manager specially designed to automate the downloading of files of free host sites such as Rapidshare, Megaupload, Hotfiles and many others..
