Hi all,

I would like some advice.

This is at aproperty which I let out, in the south of jhb. This house is on prepaid.

In feb 2020 a technician from the municipality came through and notified my tenant that we have the old prepaid system and needs to be upgraded. His name was Clive. He told them that he will return in 5 working days to do the swop.

He returned a few weeks later to say that he will come through the following week to install but we need to pay R1000 for installation.
I was not comfortable with this when the tenant called. He said if we dont pay he will remove the old meter and we would no lights till the new meter was installed.
I tried calling the municipality a but the hold time was in the hours.
We finally decided we will pay just to get it done.

Low and behold, he did not return.
this Jan i get a call from the tenant saying there is something wrong with the inside meter(where you punch in the pin).
When we checked the box outside, the meter was gone and was just the switch.
We called and we were told "Clive" doesn't work there anymore.

Finally someone came today to install " new meters" and he wants a R5000 to install the new meter saying that thee is no old meter... I told him what happened and he said that he doesn't care and if we don't pay he will cut the lights and we won't have any.

What can I do?
Do I continue to call the municipality, as this is thier guy?
I dobt think you pay cash for this, I asked if it is a cost then bill my municipality account?

You need to report your meter as stolen because that's what happened, get it sorted with the municipality and stop dealing with "Clives", i think they are contractors hoping for a quick buck.

If this is in Soweto I can get my buddy Simpiwe, or like we call him "Current", to hook you up with a straight through connection with a dummy metre just to fool the authorities

Hi

Do you believe the meter theft is linked with the Clive incident?

If so, why?

Based on the info provided, I see it as 2 separate incidents where Clive disappeared with the R1k.
Then another person stole your meter.

With that being said, report your meter as stolen with the municipality and ask them what should you do?

Get a quote from a company that installs prepaid meters and compare to the options from the municipality
