I bought a iPhone 7 32gb a few months ago. One evening I woke up to a dead iPhone. After fault-finding, I realized the cable was faulty. It had a green layer on one of the contacts, similar to this link:

https://lifehacks.stackexchange.com...e-contacts-of-an-apple-usb-to-lightning-cable

I took it to the iStore, hoping that they would replace it (unit still under warranty), as it seems like a design fault according to my research. They sent it in for diagnostics and "Core-Group" quoted me R767.49 to repair the cable!

Are they mad? It cost R399 for a replacement at the iStore, and even cheaper elsewhere. How can I escalate this to Apple Support? Or would I waste my time?

You'll just waste your energy and time. I had a USB-C cable that died once - they refused to cover it so I was forced to buy a new one. The next day Apple issued a worldwide recall on the cables and they refused to refund me for the purchase the day before.

This lightning cable 'corrosion/deposit' issue baffles me. I've had an original Apple cable that came with my iPhone fail after a few months, with some fairly heavy deposits. Two different third-party cables have also caused problems from time to time but still work,

The interesting part is that, at least in my case, I tend to always plug the cable into the phone in the same orientation. On inspecting the port in the base of the phone, the sprung contacts are located at the bottom of the port, so I expected to find the corrosion marks in the corresponding place on the plug, but they're actually on the other side of the plug, which never makes electrical contact.

The cult of apple needs dough to build a statue of Steve jobs

So stop complaining and buy another cable.

I was pro android until i got my first iPhone. Quality and security being the two most important aspects that come to play.

Android is fraught with issues in these two areas. Highly fragmented ecosystem with numerous security issues

Apple will just laugh at you as they aren't officially in the country.

Just buy another cable for R399.

I've repaired a phone where the lightning cable connector broke off in the phone a month after purchase,Apple support was nice enough to offer a 20% discounted replacement phone

Some superglue and a paperclip and the phone was saved

Moral of the story: you won't get far with Apple support

even apple has those issues , nobody is really secure,

if that is what you worried about, use a cup and string to communicate:D

But you will still be a loyal apple fan?Why are apple fans so loyal? If one brand messes with me in any way I never support them again.

Take some rubbing alcohol and a tooth brush and have at it.

Should sort it out.

Wouldn't blame Apple for this...rather just our ****ty local support by Core. Then again Apple could step in at any moment and take over so I guess it's partly their fault.

That being said I've never had this kind of problem in many years of cables. Maybe keep your stuff cleaner?

You're ****ting me - I just tossed a apple cable in the bin this week - someone left it at the house. I thought they cost about R50.

S7 & S8 does.
Probably not the R1000 jobbie.

So it's forced on by Samsung and not really the OS itself? Guess it uses Samsung's own hardware to achieve it then.

Ergo...iOS is more secure than Android as whole then.

Heaven forbid you have the option to enable stuff yourself, what kind of madness is this "freedom" thing

Compares apples to oranges then gets sarcastic when they are different

iOS has to only cater for Apple hardware - and a limited set at that. Android has to cater for every single permutation out there running Android, which is probably why some things are left to the companies making the phones

Which is why it’s less secure...
