Data science / Data analytics is a very sought after area in SA
...mostly because all the data scientist are leaving for the US or Europe

I dont know your background, or anything but learning about this topic can be a very good idea.

My only hesitation is that with this course it is R30,000 which is almost the price of a degree.
If you want to start smaller then there are loads of good courses on udemy

Yeah, the price is a bit hectic, so yes wondering if its worthwhile. My background is a combo of many many things, Java & Delphi development, server admin (both win&lin), MSSQL and MySQL. Was mainly building telecoms apps (think USSD, SMSC integrations etc). I did a CTI computer science diploma way back in 2002 - when they were still good, but totally out of date.. obviously :)

Thought it might be a good idea to start focusing more on python and data science/engineering.. So more of an attempt to become more employable really. Been doing some Udemy courses, some good - other just horrible.

Hi all,

I'm thinking of doing some kind of data engineering course, and came across Explore. Any thoughts?

The course (online and part time) I'm considering: https://explore-datascience.net/course/info/3/3/online

Thanks in advance :)
This may be ok, it’s a little hard to tell. I assume you are aware of the differences between Data Scientist vs Data Analysis vs Data Engineer?

My concerns with this course are that (a) in practice the roles may not be as distinct as one would like and you would be doing a lot more programming and math than you think (in which case a degree would be much better), or (b) it could lean the other way and you would need really top notch system administration (hardware/networking/storage/OS-management/etc), skills, which this course isn’t going to teach either (rather do a bunch of vendor certifications for this).

I see from your previous reply that you have some skills in both dev and sys admin, which would definitely help with either eventuality.

all good points, thanks cguy. And yes, the difference are understood. Look, a degree is not really an option for me at this point (for some reason I feel really old at 38 - maybe its pandemic fatigue, or my kids' fault :) ). I'm more looking at pivoting a little bit in my career and learning some new skills without going the degree route. My experience is a 50/50 split of systems admin, software development. Thought the course might be a good option to get a better understanding of big data and the modern way of manipulation of it.
