BEDFORDVIEW – There has been an explosion outside Czech businessman Radovan Krejcir’s Moneypoint shop in the Bedfordview on Thursday.

Emergency teams have now cordoned off the area opposite the Eastgate Shopping Centre.

A witness at the scene describes the experience as terrifying.

“I heard an explosion and a bit of the debris from the explosion hit my car as I was driving in. I then did a u-turn and drove back out to see what was going on. When I went past the offices, you could see there had been an explosion. A couple of windows had been blown out.”

Explosion near Eastgate mall

A bomb exploded in Bedfordview near the Eastgate shopping mall late Tuesday afternoon, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

"There was an bomb explosion at the corner of Bradford and Nicol roads in Bedfordview," said Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago.

He said metro police had no further information at this stage.

Eyewitness News reported the blast was at a shop owned by businessman Radovan Krejcir, who is currently fighting his extradition to the Czech Republic where he is facing a prison sentence.

Sapa was unable to reach Krecjir on his cellphone.

Two people were killed and five others injured when a bomb exploded in Bedfordview near the Eastgate shopping mall on Tuesday afternoon, Ekurhuleni emergency services said.

"There is a confirmed explosion. As to what caused the explosion, it is unconfirmed for now," said spokesman William Ntladi.

"It is confirmed now two people died on scene and three are critically injured. They have been taken to Bedford Gardens hospital, and the other two with minor injuries."

He said the explosion took place on the corner of Bradford and Nicol road.

"What we can confirm is the intersection is totally closed to traffic for security reasons."

Police, Ekurhuleni metro police and emergency management services were on the scene, said Ntladi.

Metro police Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago confirmed earlier that the explosion took place at the corner of Bradford and Nicol roads.

Krejcir was the target in July of an apparent bid to kill him outside his Bedfordview office.

"It is alleged that he [Krejcir] arrived at the premises and parked his vehicle," police spokesman Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said at the time.

"As he was leaving the parking spot, an explosive device was detonated from the back of a vehicle, a VW Polo, parked opposite his vehicle."

Krejcir escaped unharmed. The blast, in the parking lot of the Money Point gold and diamond exchange's head office, on the corner of Nicol and Bradford Roads, Bedfordview, left several holes in Krejcir's car.

The VW Polo was stolen in Brixton, Johannesburg, in April.

Krejcir said he heard noises, like bullets being fired, from a car he parked next to.

"I managed to get away and saved my life... someone out there tried to kill me," Krejcir told Sapa at the time.

About three weeks earlier, Krejcir's Bedfordview business was broken into and jewellery worth R3 million was stolen.

"It is on the same premises where an attempt to kill him was executed. On July 3, unknown suspects broke into the premises through the roof, cut open a safe, and stole jewellery worth approximately R3 million," Dlamini said at the time.

This comes just one month after Krejcir business associate Issa, known as “The Cripple” or “Black Sam” in underworld circles, died in a hail of bullets. More than 33 bullets were fired at his Audi Q7. He was assassinated a few metres from his home in Bedfordview, east of Joburg.

It is said that Issa was a close business associate of alleged underworld boss Radovan Krejcir.

Issa and Krejcir are said to have had a major fallout on Friday night at Krejcir’s business, Money Point Gold Coin Diamond Exchange, in Bedfordview before the shooting.

Krejcir has denied any links with Issa.

Krejcir declines to comment on blast

Czech businessman Radovan Krejcir declined to comment on Wednesday after a blast killed two people at his business in Bedfordview.

"Sorry, I'm not talking to the press," he told Sapa by cellphone.

Police were still combing the scene of the blast that also left five people injured.

The device went off late on Tuesday afternoon at Krejcir's Money Point gold and diamond exchange office next to Johannesburg's Eastgate shopping centre.

Police helicopters landed at the scene on Wednesday morning.

Forensic experts told Sapa late on Tuesday evening that the building's roof had collapsed due to the magnitude of the blast.

A forensic expert, speaking on condition of anonymity, said they were still trying to establish what kind of explosive was used.

"We still have to figure out what kind of bomb it was and the type of components it had."

The injured were taken to Bedford Gardens Hospital.

In July, Krejcir was the target of an apparent assassination attempt outside his Bedfordview office.

The blast in the parking lot of Money Point left several holes in Krejcir's car.

The VW Polo was stolen in Brixton, Johannesburg, in April.

Krejcir said he heard noises, like bullets being fired, from a car he parked next to.

"I managed to get away and saved my life... someone out there tried to kill me," Krejcir told Sapa at the time.

"It is on the same premises where an attempt to kill him was executed. On July 3, unknown suspects broke into the premises through the roof, cut open a safe, and stole jewellery worth approximately R3 million," Dlamini said at the time.
