The illegal trade in marine resources was dealt a blow this morning when an explosion at a house in Maitland exposed an illegal abalone processing facility‚ Western Cape police said on Thursday.

Officers were called to the house after an explosion was reported just before 7am.

One person was transported to hospital with severe burn injuries‚ while a second fled.

The buildings on the property were extensively damaged by the explosion.

Two neighbouring houses were also damaged.

On investigation‚ police discovered an illegal abalone processing facility at the back of the house.

Dear Saffer Media

Please learn to pronounce abalone correctly.

On radio and TV one hears "abba-loan". The rest of the world sniggers at our ignorance. It's worse than saying "pizz-zah" for "pete-sah"

It's "abba-low-knee".

Or perlemoen.

They also laugh at us calling traffic lights Robots.
Should we also call Tomatoes "Toe-may-toes", or Potatoes, "Po-ta-dows"?

Which is utterly daft and I think our pronunciation is infinitely better.

now if they can splice abalone genes, and make random buggers produce high levels of nitroglycerine...

Interesting that you don't see abalone/perlemoen/whatever on the menu at most eateries, yet there is a market for these.

Prohibition always creates a black market, always.

You do get it on the menu at some eateries still though, just hectically expensive to offer it legally. You can have it here (not recommended) or here (recommended).

You can even buy it legally to cook at home from here, but it will only be farm-grown and small in size.
