Welkom - A huge explosion rocked Welkom, in the Free State, early on Saturday evening, Netwerk24 reported.

Smoke could be seen billowing above the central business district at about 17:30.

According to unconfirmed reports six people were injured.

Police spokesperson Ketabile Mofokeng said an Eskom sub-station behind the traffic department had "exploded".

She confirmed that the police and emergency workers were at the scene, but she didn’t know if anyone had been injured.

Don't change the cooling oil, carbon build up on the terminals, flash boom bang. Proudly brought to you by the ANC.

Reminds me of a substation fire in Joburg where the oil caught alight. A friend was in the engineering team assembled by the insurer. It turned out the station hadn't been properly maintained for a decade. One City Power manager apparently said that he thought that insurance would cover the maintenance if it was needed. Needless to say the claim was repudiated.

methane explosion in mine shaft? not sub station as initially thought

News24: "Reports have confirmed that it had been a methane gas explosion at the old President Brand 1 Shaft, which is no longer in use. It happened while the shaft was being filled with rubble."

Who is responsible for filling the mineshaft with rubble that literally sparked a methane explosion? I bet it was that Jan van Riebeeck guy that has been causing all the problems lately

Nope, Cecil John Rhodes!

Oh, I thought Cecil was the architect of Apartheid but it was really old Jan that paved the way for Cecil.

It's best if there is only one official scapegoat to blame for everything that has ever gone wrong, people will get confused when there is more than one official scapegoat.

And it doesn't take much to confuse these people.

I thought it was a drunk truck driver, asleep at the wheel, doing a u-turn

Olde Jan is the guy to blame for roads, trucks, rubble, mine shafts, electricity and everything else that has caused a disturbance in king Zumatello's loincloth.

I suspect fermenting Marula berriers and alcohol made from them pre-dated Jan, so he is not responsible for alcohol and drunkenness.
