Hi all,

I'm looking for an extended run 600va UPS that has an alarm which you can silence (or none at all), and also only has its fan running when running on batteries, or charging.

I have come up empty so far looking for an item that meets both criteria so I thought I would start a thread asking if anybody could help.

As soon as I get a minute I will update this post with what I have found so far.

You can use an APC BackUPS 1500 with and Extended run BackUPS battery pack. The rating is 1500VA as most of the smaller APC BackUPS range do not cater for extended run.

The APC BackUPS has an LCD for monitoring and has an alarm mute button. I have one of these units and it gives me around 800 minutes with the extended run pack.
Note: I am using it to power networking equipment only.

If you are placing an order ensure you specify that you want the extended run kit.

What does a UPS go for anyway?
And an inverter ?

Are we looking at sub R2,000? I just want to run a little router so I can wifi on my tablet

It all depends on the run time you require for your application, whether you want a cheapie or not...
For R2000 you may getting a cheapie. Personally I don't trust cheapie UPS's.

PS. An UPS is an inverter however with additional filtration, regulation and monitoring circuitry.

You can get an APC UPS for around R900 - entry level and it can go up to R7000+ for longer runtime fancier versions.
