Hi Guys

Which plans should we be looking at for extended warranties? Vehicle is less than 5 yrs old.

thanks
Kitty

I've heard Hollard motor xtender is a decent one. I haven't personally used them though

The biggest rip off since the invention of medical aids.
Tantamount to giving an insurance company total control over your vehicle, as, "they" decide everything about how you should service and maintain your vehicle.

I’m personally with Bidvest Warranty and they are pretty good. If I’m not mistaken, I’m sure with your car you’d be able to get unlimited cover.

Third party warranties are just expensive insurance policies. And even so, as your car gets older, they cover less and less. So the "best" one would be the lowest quote with the highest cover.

I get the whole peace of mind thing, but they are such a waste of cash. I got a third party warrantee when I bought my car because I was paranoid. The warrantee kicked in after 5 years. They wouldn't cover the one thing that broke like a month after the factory warrantee expired (it was a door lock), so I had to fork out for that. Nothing else broke, and the car is 8 years old now. If I could go back, I wouldn't have bothered with it.

Seriously doubt this. There are always limits with these things. Even factory warrantees have limits.

100% this.

When I bought my car, I bought a warranty, just for the peace of mind aspect and it wasn't hugely expensive for 2 years (R12k)... but when something did actually go pop, it was magically not covered in the list of items, so I had to fork out for it. I'm almost out of the warranty period now so it was technically R12k down the drain really but I don't regret buying it because for those 2 years I had the peace of mind that if something big like the motor went pop I'd get some money back at least.

What I meant is that if a component needs repair or replacing and it is a covered component, they will pay for it regardless of how much it costs. Assuming obviously that they approve the repair.

Nope, there are very few unlimited extended warranties (if any) left.

They all have limits on them down to the sub-part level now.

I bought a 5yr old car that was just over a certain mileage level and as an example if something in the cooling system went my maximum claimable amount would have been R9000 on the policy, not per incident.

Per the policy wording for Bidvest McCarthy:
If you choose the MY WARRANTY EXTENDED policy: there is unlimited Mechanical and Electrical breakdown benefits payable for the duration of your policy. We will pay all claims per the definition of Mechanical and Electrical Breakdown and subject to the list of Covered Components.

So if your car is eligible for that cover, you're covered for unlimited amounts. I am personally not on this cover as the F20 didn't qualify for the Unlimited one. My limit for the duration of the policy I am on is R50 000. To date, I have claimed exactly R40 684.87. Not bad considering I bought the cover for R14 824.00 back in 2018.

The only limit that I can pick up, per the policy wording:
Should there be failure of multiple components relating to the same incident/day the cover will only extend to the most expensive component

My personal take is that a warranty is a good thing. There are others who will obviously disagree, and that is fine. You'll decide whether its worth it or not OP.

I have never bothered with aftermarket warranties, as has been mentioned they don't provide that great cover and cover less and less as the car gets older, either age or mileage wise.

I am not unhappy I took my extended warranty, even though I class it as wasted money now that I'm nearing the end of its term.

But I hunted around at the time, and I couldn't find one that was unlimited cover, they all had sublimits on the different sections. So engine was up to X, Gearbox up to y etc etc...

When i bought a 2017 car, i was offered an AA 10k extended warranty as the car had just gone out of OEM warranty.
Few months later the passenger side mirror has died, needs replacing plus its a known fault on the models.
I will be using the warranting and see how they honour the claim and pay out.

In terms on engine, gearbox, suspension and electrics no issue at all with the car as i did thorough research before buying.

My experience with the 3 claims I made against my Hollard's MotorExtender policy have been very worthwhile so far. Here are the links to my postings & comments on this topic:
