I live in a bad reception spot and mtn came and installed a yaggi aerial which gave full 3g hsdpa reception as long as I use the pc in the study with mtn dongle on the aerial pad.

now that I have a laptop I want to be able to move around the house and not tied to a yaggi aerial. the laptop has it's own wireless network adapter.

not knowing much about wireless networks or routers I was wondering if there is a way I can setup a router linked to yaggi aerial to send the 3g signal to laptop?

if so what equipment do I need?

thanks

You'll need something like the D-Link DIR-451. Modem plugs into the back of the router. Have a look here to see whether your modem is supported.

Or, as Park@82 has suggested, the B970.

ok so I found a wireless router (TL-MR3220) yesterday and managed to get it setup and working and it works perfectly - full 5 bar HSDPA from my usb dongle from anywhere in my house.

I've updated the firmware as well but now I seem to be in dark territory about security? how do I know if someone is not stealing my bandwidth? I see chrome has an ISP account activity page where u can check for unknown ISP activity. Is there any other way to ensure that no one logs on to my wireless connection?

another thing I noticed is when I disconnect from the wireless router on my laptop, the router and usb modem, which is in my office, shows that it is still connected to the internet? is there a way I can disconnect from the internet from my laptop and not having to switch off the router every time?

Make sure you use WPA2 security on your wifi, also consider enabling mac filtering. If you are getting dhcp addresses from the router, you should be able to check on the dhcp client list to see who is accessing it. This is not a sure way of telling because a person can easily assign a static address to his machine. There might be some other logs to check.
You should be able to disconnect the connection from the web interface. /I know my tp-link does.
