all i need to run over the usb is a keyboard and mouse for our alarm control room. and it needs to go about 12m. the cable works if i just plug a keyboard or mouse in but as soon as i plug the hub in so that i can use both it picks the hub up as usb device not reconinized.... even if i give power to the usb hub it does not work. how can i get it to pick up the device???? please help thanks..... :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
 
probably, at the moment, you have something like this

if you want to go to 12m...you need to make a chain, like this
pc--->product 2---->product1 (we are at 10m now)----product 2--->device

(basically, product 2 is an active cable, with a one port hub built into it. usb loses its marbles at around 4 or 5m, depending on the device. not a power issue, but a length of signalling issue.
 
ok i have tried that we have an active cable. but it still does not work even tried adding 2 of the active cables and when i plug the hub in at the end of the 10 meters it tells me that usb device is not reconised. this is urgent but not working
 
I have another cable with a few joints that is seperate from the others it is about 10m but that works which I dont understand please explain that to me i am lost dont know what is going on
 
When you say seperate, do you mean the 2xActive usb cable of 5 meters each is parallel to other cables? Or do you have another USB cable of 10 meters which works?

USB is very specific in the amount of resistance the cable may provide. This is where the 5 meter maximum comes in. At lower speed it will not be a problem. I am unsure the exact implimentation of the hub, but it is possible that the keyboard and mouse is running a slower USB 1.0 spec, and the hub causes the usb to switch over to 2.0.

I have a few shorter cables a 1m a 5m and a 5m cable that works and they are joined together and it works with the usb hub perfectly which i don't understand. please explain but as soon as i add a 5m usb active cable and another 5m cable it does not work or even if i add just plain 2 5m cables it does not work. which confuses me completely
 
Thoughts :
1. Faulty active cable
2. BIOS Firmware (yes, it can cause problems like this)
3. USB 1.0 Hub problem (active cable should contain hub), fixed in USB 1.1

You say your other cables work with the hubs... I would then recommend you then use the working combination. Make mental note of broken combination, and see to it when it happens again.
 
my old set which consists of 1x 1m cable and 2x 5m cable work perfectly with the hub and pc i am testing on pc and using the same pc for testing so it cant be the bios if it works with the pc.
 
ok think i have come to the route of the problem... even if I use a plain 5m cable with a hub it doesnt work so it must be the cable dam it is such a tymission..... 17 cables that are faulty
 
17 :eek: that just seems a bit odd. Maybe it is some other hardware device that is giving you some problems?
 
USB cable lengths are a pain. I had an interactive whiteboard type attachment at my ex job, attempted to be used in a very awkward classroom. Thing would not work with 2 extender cables plugged into it, no matter what. I had to try and explain why to the teacher in plain english. That was tough lol.

Good luck getting it to work, if it's possible.
