Hey all ...

I hope I can get some help ... I am currently on the Promo 5 deal and have been getting some seriously shocking reception of late (Villieria, Pretoria)

Seems I am a student I cannot afford those huge and fancy antenna for R1000+ ...

I can on the other hand find - 3-5dbi gain antenna with a CRC9 connector that run @ 2100 and then I can find this antenna which says it is a 18dbi gain for only R230 but there is no stats as to whether it is 2100 compatible or not ...

How much real world difference will i see using these antenna ? ... ... I am just 3 blocks from the Signal Tower yet I get shocking speeds locally and even worse internationally ...

All information would be greatly appreciated.
Regards.

So what is the dBi gain of the built in antenna of your modem/router, if higher than the antenna's you are considering, then you are not likely to get any improvement from using them.

Either I am useless with google or I cannot find any information showing what the gain is for my modem ...

I am using the Huawei E353

I don't think that gain is correct, a fancy R1000+ antenna only like this only has a gain of 11dbi.

Try running some tests outside, preferrably on the roof with direct line-of-sight to the base station.

Your problem may be a congested base station, in which case no antenna will help you.

Hi there,
Try the line of sight tests first and if it improves then there is a case to be made for looking at an additional Antenna.
You can have a look at what Poynting has to offer and I have heard that speaking to them they are extremely helpful.
If line of sight does not improve then it is likely that your base station is congested.

Tim

Thanks for all the responses ! ...

I have tried the line of site thing the best I could (don't trust the roof of my garden flat vs my weight ... lol ... place isn't built fantastically)

I notice a bit of a difference but not much ... I also contacted 8ta and they said they will contact me regarding sending out a technician

it seems that the issue may be a congested base station ...

I am with MTN and using a E356 wireless router, was getting 20 - 30 kb/s, called MTN when then came to test my signal and it appears that there is no 3G in my area, they arranged a external Antenna to be installed at no cost to me and now i am getting nothing less than 320kb/s, im using a 10GB uncapped package and on quite times i get 3-4MB/s, Give your ISP a call and see what they can do for you before you go spend your own money.

I have 3G in my area and my speeds are ok I guess ... According to speedtest.net I average 1.3mb down and 800kb up ... I sometimes have faster and sometimes slower ...

But I ran a few traces and checked whois and there are 2 IP addresses that both belong to Telkom that seems to be the problem my ping to those servers is always above 400ms (normally 600ms) and after that the ping to all servers averages 400kb+

8ta sent a technician out today and he says that my reception while not good isn't baaad ... but lets see what happens

I have a Huwaie E367 dongle with a 5dbi gain antenna. I dont get better latency, but I have a lot more stable connection.
It helps, you will see the diffrence.
