I want to get a bigger primary SSD for my Dell Precision - 128GB is just irritating me now. If I buy and install a bigger SSD and take the opportunity to venture/upgrade to Win 8 at the same time, I might wish to access some stuff from my old SSD which will no longer be connected to anything. Is it possible to get a case of some sort to turn my old SSD into an external HDD until I am sure I have copied all the data off it that I need ? I suppose I could copy my current primary drive to another of my existing external HDD's, but I just thought it might be easier to access the original drive.

TIA

Any external SATA HDD enclosure can be used. Vantec makes the cheapest ones.

I assume you want a usb enclosure otherwise the ssd is fine without a case.
My ssd is currently Velcro-ed into place in my case.

Yes any external 2.5" sata enclosure will do but take note of the interface speeds, USB2 will be slow as mud, USB3 better & eSATA the same as internally connected. This is assuming you have USB3 & eSATA interfaces on your PC/Laptop.

Thanks for the replies.

I assumed I needed a case because I thought the SSD would have to be plugged into specific sockets in such a case, just like I presume it is plugged into my Dell at the moment. This is just a temporary thing, so would I just need to get an eSATA cable to use it without a case as Electric suggested ?

R400 for a Vantec case is relatively cheap, but for a temp arrangement, I'd rather go without if I can.

Is your ssd housed?
My Liteon is house like this;

There are no moving parts so keeping it just like that is fine.
You just plug it into a sata cable and power supply.
Otherwise the cases suggested above already have those built in requiring you to plug the device into a std adapter with a usb connection.

As a temp or even permanent solution it is just fine to use an ssd unhoused.

This is what an ssd internals look like.
They are roughly 1/3 of the size of the housing.

Depending on wich SSD you buy it might come with a USB connector. We usually buy the Samsung Evo 840 kit which has everything you need.

I checked out the SSD now. It is not housed - it is just a card :

So I must look on takealot or wootware for some kind of edge connector with an eSATA plug on the other end. Does it have a specific name ?

Or maybe the new one that I purchase will have the required goodies - perhaps that is what Crowley meant.

Sorry if I'm being dof ! I've usually only fiddled in desktop PC's with PCI slots, etc.

Something like this ?
