I have a question about setting up a speedy external drive.
I have a MacBook Pro 2017 with the thunderbolt ports , and I need an external drive, for storing / running linux VM's off.
was wondering if a USB 3 external would be fast enough , or if it needs to be an SSD ?

But also want the cheapest option, I.e on a budget of R2-3 k
would it be better to buy a drive enclosure and drive ? or a usb 3 drive with a thunderbolt -> usb 3 adaptor ?

any ideas. ?

thanks Lord Flacko - thats exactly the beast I need. perfect.

For R3k you can get the Samsung T5 Portable 1TB from Amazon and it includes shipping/duties/vat

The T5 is a USB 3.1 device and not Thunderbolt, the X5 is Thunderbolt but costs at least 2x more.

Hi ponder

The T5 I’m looking at has usb-c , I thought that was = thunderbolt but now I’m not sure

Edit : ok the X5 is true thunderbolt 5X faster

Nope, the port type does not indicate the interface type. usb-c can be usb or thunderbolt

The price will usually tell you as well
