I've got a lot of machines and have just upgraded to Vista Ultimate 64 bit on one of my machines (4Gb RAM) - obviously clean install, thats all you can do with 64 bit upgrade.
On my Linux Fedora 9 machine, I can mount my 160 external NTFS drive
On my Windows 2000 machine, I can mount my 160 external NTFS drive
On my Windows XP machine, I can mount my 160 external NTFS drive
On my Media Center machine, I can mount my 160 external NTFS drive
On my Vista 64 machine, it tells me to format the drive????

Anyone else seen that? I've loaded up the computer manager -> disk management, it sees the volume, but can't access it? What are microsoft smoking? It's the only machine I cannot connect my external drive too and it should be the most compatibile right? sheesh

Never seen that.
All my Vista Ultimate 64 (4) and all Vista Business 32 (2) and Win2K (1) and WinXP (2) machines can see all 13 of my external USB drives. Don't have Linux machines to check, sorry.
Great variety of external USB drives:
2 x 1TB Hitachi 3.5-inch in LiteOn housings
4 x Various 200GB-400GB 3.5-inch in NexStar 3 housings
4 x Maxtor Basics 320GB 2.5-inch
3 x 160GB 2.5-inch in various el-cheapo housings
