Hi Guys

So my external started acting strange yesterday when I connected it to my TV. I couldn't access some videos and some would just freeze half way and they never did before. Now when I try to connect it to my PC nothing happens. It just shows as Local Disk (E:) instead of showing the hard drive name.

Anyone know how I can fix this without formatting or getting a new one?

Also may I add that the issue is that it won't let me access the drive. When I double-click the drive, the green loading bar at the goes for about a minute then an error message pops up saying:

E:\ is not accessible.
The parameter is incorrect

Eish. Maybe do a drive scan? Otherwise you could open up the the drive and double check the connections.

What drive is it? Does it take external power?

Can probably use software like Recuva and recover the data and then reformat and use again.

It's a 1TB Toshiba Hard drive I won on MyBroadBand :( I did a scan and it said I had to do a scan and repair... I did the scan and repair but 30 minutes in, no progress... I even did a chkdsk, no progress after 20 minutes.... Maybe I should do it again and just leave it for like an hour....

Sounds like it's dying. Go with what supersunbird said and try recover, then format.

Open up a Command Prompt window, type chkdsk e: /f where E would be your drive letter and see if that maybe solves your problem

Tried that but nothing happens and when I disconnect the external this message appears on the Command Prompt; "cannot open volume for direct access"

Hirens boot CD->Parted Magic (to get the files) or just run crystal disk info.

You can try rebuild the partition, sounds like it got damaged.

Attempt data recovery.

Unfortunately I've had the displeaaure of having multiple "dances" with Toshiba drives. 5 of the 6 were not even a month out of warranty.

The result: I now avoid Toshiba.

Tried chkdsk and I am getting "The record segment is unreadable" messages.... I decided to try formatting it and I got a pop-up saying, "You do not have sufficient rights to perform this operation"... So I am guessing that is completely f***ed... *sigh* guess I lost all my series and now I need to buy a new one....

Thanks a lot for trying to assist me guys

Which brand do you swear by now? Since it seems like I need to get a new one now...

Not necessarily. You can try taking full ownership of the device (just google how to do that) and try again.

Alternatively, plug into a Mac and see if it works any differently.

So Recuva did not see the files on there after a proper deep scan?

(obviously this needed to have been done before trying any of these fixes)

No it didn't... I tried Recuva and EasuUs Data Recovery Wizard... They both can't find the files or the drive... Let me try again and see what happens

Let me try that out, I don't have a Mac or know anyone rich enough to own one *insert sad laugh*
