Need a maximum size, very fast, yet small and portable, USB powered external hard drive that is reasonably priced.

Makro has a Trekstor 120GB for R1095
HiFi Corp has a Transcend 120GB for R900

Any other suggestions?

If you are in Durban I think PC Zone has a 200GB for about 700 and a 500GB for 1500

That doesn't sound right? Are those prices for the HDD's only? Or does it include an external housing as well?

I got a Seagate FreeAgent Pro 320GB ESATA recently, and I have to say, it runs Suse 10.2 via USB on my laptop very nicely :) I still need to setup the ESATA though, but it should be even quicker than the USB

At that price for those sizes, they are probably externally powered. He wants a USB powered drive.

im not sure if you are interested but take a look at my thread

" EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE I BOUGHT " hope it helps

Hi there

I bought one of these http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?cPath=61_63&products_id=8763

Not from them though from a local dealer here.

Teamed it up with a case from here http://www.nanoelf.co.za/inch-enclosure-firewire-p-201.html

This way I have FW for speed and USB for those that dont have FW slot. Great drive, fast and so far reliable.

GUYS YOU ARE MISSING THE POINT : this is also playable on your tv whether its a movie or pics or mp3 thats what i like about it

I doubt it, the 7200rpm drives use up too much power. I occasionally get warning beeps from my 5400rpm drive because the usb port doesn't supply enough power, so I have to plug in the extra usb connector to get it going again.

Thanks. That is what I thought. I think I will settle for the 160GB 5400rpm Lacie drive (USB powered).

Any suggestions as to where I can get a good price besides DigitalPlanet and Exactmall (Have2Have)?

Laptop disks are small, portable, though for some reason they keep breaking. I think it has to do with power fluctuations. I have had 3 of them die, different brands.

Thank you for all the recommendations. I need to clarify my requirements:

1. I need an external hard drive.
2. It must be mobile and USB powered - no additional AC adaptor.
3. It must also have a rotational speed of 7200rpm.

Does such a drive exist?
Doesnt running it via USB2 negate the added speed of a 7200?

If you want speed fw400 or better still FW800 are a much better solution to USB2.

Yes you are correct.. max transfer rate is about -+25mb/s for both 5.4k and 7.2k.. used HD tach to measure.. 25mb/s in this case is the ceiling for usb.. u wont get any faster

If you could buy the parts sep... opt for a 2.5inch(lappy hdd) sata 5200rpm harddrive.. cache doesnt really matter in this case since its jis storage

Aslo a good case.. i would suggest philips.. good chipset.. metal case.. very sturdy

Yawn i need sleep.. look at the forkin time :p
