Hi All.

In the market for an external HDD - Takealot links below for reference.

Does anyone have experience of the Western Digital Elements 2TB drive? Price is not bad at R999.

I have used Toshiba for a while - and if I go this route will be looking at something like the:
(R300 more than the WD).

Another option is the Seagate at R1175

Thoughts? Basically it boils down is the Toshiba worth the price premium over the WD and Seagate?

All HDD are pretty much the same or similar TBH unless you have a specific use ?

From my personal experiences, Toshibas had been great. I have had one external Seagate fail. WD - no experience of them

So far only time one of my WD failed when a friend umm let gravity take care of it :crying:
but same thing happen with a Toshiba i had, so the only issue i have with drives is my friends

I have 2 drives sitting on my xbox one for games (come to think of it, I have a toshiba on my xbox 360), another one i set up to use on a plex server, those 3 are used constantly, and a bunch of other WD running around being used for this and that.

WD is a decent brand. I am using a Transcend (which could be a WD, Seagate, Fujitsu or Toshiba drive) for about 3 and a half years. Main thing is the warranty and how quick you can get it replaced if it kak$ out

At the end of the day i dont mind paying a bit more for better reliability. Link below from Backblaze, the only company (to my knowledge) publishing some stats. But nothing for 2TB and no WD models mentioned. Seagate has 2 models with higher failure rates than rest

I have had 3 Seagate's fail on me in the last few years. The last one I bought lasted a week. Could just be crappy luck but I no longer buy seagate. I have a Toshiba External that has been rock solid though.

I have 4 x Toshiba 1TB Drives (approx 2 years old) and 3 x Seagate- 1TB is over 5 years old, 3TB is around 3 years old and 6TB less than a year old). All strong.

Dont get WD, their drives have some proprietary connector so if the case or USB fails you cant buy a new case at matrix and pop it in.

I have an equally big pile of failed WD, Seagate and Toshiba drives in the office that have been recovered. Actually the Seagate pile is the highest, but that being said they are sold the most. I could give my opinion of which I think is best, but as is apparent in my industry they all fail at some point, luck being the deciding factor. The cheapest one that is backed up is the best choice.
