So I need an external hardrive and I am thinking either a 1tb or a 1.5tb.

I need some advice on which would be the best one to go for as there was that whole thing with the seagate (?) ones that broke or something...

Thanks

It was a problem with the 7200.11 drives corrupring themsleves there is a fix but its a bit of a mission from what i've heard. Rather stay away from the .11 revision and go for the .12 revisions. They quite reliable I hear or atleast I haven't heard of any issues with them. If you want a really strong performing reliable drive get a Western Digital Black I've never had any problems with them. I would also recommend getting a hardrive and enclosure separate so if the drive eventually does fail a replacement is easy to do. Also look out for esata enclosures if you have an esata port on your board because the speed difference is quite noticeable.

I'm wanting to spend around R1000.00 on this so I'm not looking for anything fancy.

Like I said before I don't like sealed units and you can build one for the same price or cheaper.

look at this enclosure

with this drive:

its works out to cost inbetween the 2 you linked to and you get get better performance and reliability than the seagate you linked and close to that of the Western Digital. Plus you have the added advantage of not having a sealed unit to deal with if something goes wrong.

Pooky I bought a Samsung 1TB from PC Zone in December for R 800. Put in a Vantec black alumin case and all was sorted.

I'm going to PC Zone today.

Can I put my music on an external hard drive and play it off there?

Ah PC zone don't know the firmware...

Does anyone know of a physical shop in Durban that sells Western Digital External Hard Drives?

Do yourself a favour and don't buy a Seagate 1.5TB, they have issues, even with new firmware they don't work well with windows. I have one that only works right in Linux, in win7 or winXP they have the "click of death".

I think the Western Digital MYBOOK ones are good, does anyone know of any stockists in durban?

It seems like a lot of places stock Verbatim and Toshiba, are they any good?

Ok so it's either the seagate from pczone or the western digital elements from makro.

Which one is better? They are both the same price R999.00
