Hey guys.

So I had the plug part of the USB enclosure in the wall socket, knocked up against it with the couch and sparks came out of it. At this point, the actual enclosure was not attached to the power cable, just the cable was plugged in. It is one of those all in one jobbies- not the kind with a lead that plugs into like a surge protector thing which then plugs into the wall.

Now, when i plug it back into the enclosure and turn it on, nothing happens power wise, nothing at all :(. I am sadly not at home at the moment so I don't have any other plugs to try out in the enclosure. I know it is not the plug or power point that is at fault as when i plug in other stuff, like a lamp, they work fine.

What I am wondering is, basically if just the cord that goes to the wall can have fused or been broken by the shorting of it when the sparks came out, even though it was not plugged into the enclosure at the time. I will head out tomorrow and purchase another cable if that is the case. I would buy another enclosure for R200 but I have enough of those already and if I can save this one just by buying a cable then I'd rather do that...

Any thoughts/ideas/opinions? (apart from that I took a loooong time to get to my point :p)

:)

Edit: also, for clarification, the enclosure is a Chronos one, with a normal 80GB Samsung IDE HDD in it.

Hehe, erm ok.

Well there is a USB enclosure and there is a cable that goes from it to the wall socket. This seems to be faulty.

When I plug other things into the same power socket they work fine...

i was wondering if it is possible that it is just this adapter part that is broken and not the whole enclosure?

Is it one of these types?

or one of these:

If the first, then it sounds like the AC/DC power adapter got fried by the sparking - happens often with the two-pins - I had this with a cheap enclosure that I bought - the enslosure was fine, but the AC/DC power plug/pack/adapter that was included was really cheap and nasty. I eventually went and bought a 1 amp Ellies multi power adapter with selectable output voltage (from 3v - 12v DC) - works great.

Very first thing to do is check the blown power adapter to see what the ratings are - should be something like:
AC Input - 200-240v AC, 0.3A
DC Output - 12v DC, 1.7A

Ya, that is pretty much what it looks like. I will hunt for a replacement power cable tomorrow then. Thanks for the help :)

No problem - let us know if you come right... :)

Got a shiny new HDD enclosure for R250 cos nowhere seemed to have the plug I needed, not in PE anyway :p

Still have the old enclosure in case I find a cable to power it.
